For the last 4 1/2 years I have taught GED with success to adult learners. Areas of study included math through algebra 1, reading, writing, science and social studies. Prior to this I taught and tutored at all age levels the above subjects including elementary Spanish and English as a second language. I have a current California teaching
certificate that can be verified. I have had good rapport with students and made accommodations to their individuality. I love teaching, have the motivation and competence to help students achieve their goals.
Algebra 1 requires some prealgebra assessment in computation skills in number operations, fractions and decimals. And dealing with percents naturally involves elementary algebra. Equations and simple graphing can be fun!
First I have a computation assessment test indicating whether whole number operations of addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication need instruction and practice. Then comes assessment in fractions, decimals and percents which naturally involves elementary algebra. Instruction and practice in these areas may be indicated. An integration of numbers with pictures, objects and words is often effective and leads to word problems. Success in repeated simple to more complex
problems leads to progress in this important and fun subject. And of course instruction is collaborative with the student's present school instruction and text, if any.
There are various strategies for teaching English depending on the student's interests, goals, learning style and rapport with the teacher. So teaching English for me is collaborative and individual. Some students are more auditory - liking to read or listen orally. Others are more visual - enjoying and producing pictures and the written word. And others are doers who like the physical or kinesthetic which can be used to teach English. Certain words are used frequently in English and can be learned with a variety of techniques, including games and art. Real life examples from life such as newspapers, ads, comics and other realia can be used. Practicing and creating dialogs and stories, from listening to producing and simple to complex, are effective in learning logic, grammar, punctuation, spelling and handwriting.
I believe in teaching English as a second or other language so that the learner's goals and how to use language are important. I can help with pronunciation, reading and writing through my materials or those that the student wants to use. Learning starts with the simple and proceeds to the more complex. Dialogs are listened to then practiced. A certain number of words are used a lot and should be learned and said correctly. Speaking and writing can be practiced to make sense with correct grammar, vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, capitalization and punctuation. I am motivated, patient and will help students achieve English proficiency.
I have taught GED successfully for 4 1/2 years with adult students. This test has 5 parts, three of which rely on reading comprehension more than a particular knowledge in the subject areas of science, social studies and reading. Practice and sometimes instruction in these three tests is indicated by GED practice tests. The mathematics GED practice test can indicate which areas need improvement. I also have a computation test indicating whether whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents naturally leading to a little necessary algebra is necessary. A little elementary geometry is also tested. The fifth test is the essay and a format of 5 paragraphs of introduction, three of examples, and a conclusion is desireable. I give examples of good essays. Then the student will submit one to me and be evaluated for logic, grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and legibility. Any of the tests not passed can be taken again and the ones passed do not have to be taken again. 80% is required on 4 GED tests and the essay is not evaluated harshly. Its not that hard, you can do it and move ahead!

An effective SAT essay should be relevant to the subject. The format should be 3 to 4 paragraphs of introduction, one or two paragraphs of examples introduced in the first paragraph and a concluding paragraph. I give examples of good essays. The student will be given a subject and make a quick outline plan of his or her essay. Then the student will submit it to me and be evaluated for logic, grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation and legibility.
I have the motivation and experience to teach an introductory Spanish program. My way of teaching Spanish uses my knowledge, experience and materials with student school instruction and text, if any. My method is also collaborative in learning areas and methods of student interest.
I am patient and realize the benefit, challenge and fun of learning another language. Individuals learn in a variety of ways and I will seek to find and use what works for you.
I have been playing tennis for 45 years and received a scholarship in 1965 to play for the Highline Community College team. I have entered senior tournaments and reached the semi-finals at the Boeing Club Tournament 10 years ago in the 3.5-4.0 level. I have a love for tennis and can pass on playing alternatives that work.
