I received my BA, MA, and PhD in psychology and have taught undergraduate and graduate level students across a number of psychology courses. My goals as a tutor are to reinforce students' strengths and tailor specific study/learning strategies to students' unique needs and their specific context. My tutoring philosophy is heavily influenced by my educational approach as student, which centers on comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. A key goal is to convey ideas effectively with extreme clarity. For most students, mastering a concept often takes hours of study outside of the classroom. Given students may not have hours upon hours of free time to study, my job is to ensure they use this time efficiently in order to accomplish their goals.
I embrace the role of a tutor or instructor in facilitating learning in the most clear and efficient manner through methods that include clear explanations, presentation of accessible examples and fostering student feedback. Through my educational experiences, I have discovered that students gain greater utility from a course that teaches a few important concepts the students maintain over time, as opposed to one focused on a number of small concepts covered in less detail.
Finally, I will do my best to use contemporary examples that fit with students' interests. I have found that students are more likely to retain knowledge they have learned in a familiar and recognizable context. Whenever possible, I will use an example from sports, movies, books, or current events that students can relate to, in order to make the topic more meaningful to students.
