Hello, my name is Kate. In life besides tutoring and teaching, I love to read, garden, cook, and walk where there are interesting trees. I recently began volunteering as a guide with the Children's Garden in Seattle.
I am a recent transplant to Seattle. However, I have several years of experience as a tutor for both children and adults. In the past, I have tutored:
-A sixth grader, whose reading level increased three and a half grade levels in the six months following our work.
-Adult English Language Learners with writing, reading, vocabulary, and job skills.
-Various children, often English Language Learners, with homework help as a platform for developing reading and math skills.
I believe that dialogue and engagement are crucial to learning well. If we can have a conversation about where you are with the subject now and your goals, then we can make a plan. As we get to know each other, we will create strategies that emphasize and explore your strengths while finding constructive, fun ways to address challenges. We will check in often to make sure that our work is useful, interesting, and satisfying to you. Supporting all of this will be a working relationship built on friendly courtesy and respect.
Four years ago, I earned a B.A. in English from the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Since then I've been an active writer and independent scholar. I very recently finished a year with Americorps VISTA as an Education Coordinator. In that position, I managed and tutored with an after school program for elementary and middle school aged children, led environmental education field experiences, and wrote several grant proposals and reports. For an additional year, I was a high school substitute teacher in a large public school system, most often leading English and language classes. I was trained to be a literacy and ESL tutor through the Rappahannock Regional Alliance for Literacy.
