My name is Heidi, and I am a college graduate entering a master's in teaching program at Antioch University. I have over four years of experience tutoring and teaching youth and adults in reading, writing, ESL, social studies and citizenship, basic math, and basic computer skills.
My work with youth has included positions as an after-school tutoring program coordinator and summer literacy teacher for K-8 students at Somali Community Services Coalition, and as a K-5 instructional assistant with the Seattle Public Schools. I have also tutored high school students in language arts, history, and math up to an algebra level. I am skilled at planning effective lessons and teaching through a variety of approaches depending on the age and learning needs of my students.
My adult tutoring experience includes two years as a volunteer English teacher with Spanish-speaking adults, and several months as a citizenship test tutor for Somali adults. As an English teacher, I used a conversation-based curriculum to plan lessons focusing on spoken English that also incorporated reading and writing activities.
I am skilled at proofreading and providing constructive feedback on writing structure and techniques. I have edited academic papers and publications for coworkers and peers, and I enjoy coaching others through the writing process.
My tutoring style is friendly, flexible, and student-centered. I am capable of providing serious academic tutoring and test preparation, but I am equally willing to use creative and fun tutoring approaches to meet the needs of younger students with various needs.
I have taken four college-level Anthropology classes: Intro to Cultural Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, Gender and Power in Africa, and the Politics of Memory in Latin America. I also conducted ethnographic research on a study abroad program in Bolivia.
I have worked as a classroom instructional assistant, after-school program coordinator, and summer program director for youth in grades K-6. Most of my students were English Language Learners, and many had other learning and behavioral challenges. I have over 2 years of experience tutoring elementary students in all subjects, especially reading, writing, and math.
I have taught adult English learners for 2 years as an ESL program volunteer. My classes ranged in size from 1 to 15 students, and included conversational English practice, reading comprehension, writing practice, and grammar instruction. I am experienced at planning lessons for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students.
I completed a ParaReading training in phonemic awareness, and also received phonics instruction training while working as an instructional assistant in the Seattle public schools (2012). I used my knowledge of phonics to plan summer literacy lessons for a group of 6 elementary students (2013).
I have taught K-8 literacy as a summer learning program coordinator and K-5 literacy as a reading instructional assistant in a Seattle public elementary school. In both of these roles, I worked with students individually and in small groups. I used techniques such as guided reading, phonics and decoding teaching points, and comprehension checks to help my students in their areas of learning. I am skilled at finding interesting, age-appropriate reading material and doing quick, informal assessments to make sure it is at the right instructional level.
As an after-school program coordinator, I worked on study skills with elementary, middle, and occasionally high school students. Many of my students were refugees who had never before attended school. If they did not have homework, I quizzed them on topics they were studying and encouraged them to plan ahead and think about how to practice their skills.
