My name is Heidi, and I am a college graduate entering a master's in teaching program at Antioch University. I have over four years of experience tutoring and teaching youth and adults in reading, writing, ESL, social studies and citizenship, basic math, and basic computer skills.
My work with youth has included positions as an after-school tutoring program coordinator and summer literacy teacher for K-8 students at Somali Community Services Coalition, and as a K-5 instructional assistant with the Seattle Public Schools. I have also tutored high school students in language arts, history, and math up to an algebra level. I am skilled at planning effective lessons and teaching through a variety of approaches depending on the age and learning needs of my students.
My adult tutoring experience includes two years as a volunteer English teacher with Spanish-speaking adults, and several months as a citizenship test tutor for Somali adults. As an English teacher, I used a conversation-based curriculum to plan lessons focusing on spoken English that also incorporated reading and writing activities.

As an after-school program coordinator, I worked on study skills with elementary, middle, and occasionally high school students. Many of my students were refugees who had never before attended school. If they did not have homework, I quizzed them on topics they were studying and encouraged them to plan ahead and think about how to practice their skills.
