Hello, Parent(s) --
My name is Meredith, and I am a former Teach For America corps member. I taught 4th grade at a Title I school in Phoenix for two years before moving to Seattle. I've been here for several years now and although I currently work as a Special Events & Communications Officer for a non-profit research institute, I am eager to work with students again.
I graduated cum laude with degrees in International Business & Management from the University of Dayton (in Ohio), as well as from Arizona State University with a Master's in Elementary Education. While teaching in Arizona, I was also a part of my school district's "Turnaround Principal Program" and my school's after-school coordinator. I also participated in school leadership team meetings at the request of my principal. Although the majority of my time was spent with students 10-12 years old, I also worked with middle schoolers through the after-school program and worked with students K-8 who required significant remediation in reading.
I pride myself on being straight-forward and "tough", yet incredibly patient and enthusiastic. I believe in being a life-long learner and look forward to working with you to instill values of hard-work and dedication in your child.
I will connect with your child and make learning fun. My philosophy is this: when students work hard and begin to see success, self-esteem and self-confidence inevitably come. This breeds a desire for students to continue to work hard and believe in themselves.
My former principal would describe me as a teacher who has a great balance between test prepraration and conceptual learning, all based on the foundation of standards-aligned education. In 2010, 82 percent of my students demonstrated proficieny in reading - compared to 50 percent in the district and 71 percent in the state. Additionally, 85 percent of my students demonstrated proficiency in math -- compared to 54 percent in the district and 63 percent in the state.
Hello, Student --
My name is Meredith, and I taught 4th grade in Phoenix, Arizona before moving up to Seattle. If you look at a map, Phoenix is the capital of Arizona, which is located in the southwestern United States. I am eager to work with you so that you can get some extra help in school. I know that if you do your best and are willing to work hard, you will understand the material and you will feel great about yourself (especially when you start coming home with good grades!)
Of course, if there is ever a time during our tutoring session that you don't understanding something, all you have to do is say, "Meredith, I am confused. Can you explain it in a different way?" and I will! This is what's great about working one-on-one -- you can always ask me to stop and start over, and you never have to be nervous about it because it'll just be the two of us; no other students will be around.
I hope to meet you soon!
