My name is Evan and I am a recent graduate of Pomona College, one of the Claremont Colleges located in east Los Angeles. At Pomona I studied Cognitive Science and Psychology, played varsity basketball, and worked as a Teacher's Assistant in the Linguistics and Cognitive Science department. Algebra 1

Algebra 1 concepts can be tricky. I took the class myself growing up, and have revisited the material when preparing for standardized testing throughout high school and college. Each time I've returned to it, I've discovered new ways of thinking about things and am equipped to approach concepts from multiple directions if needed.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is extremely important to test prep, reading, writing, English, and much more. I try to learn new words whenever possible because I know how much it will help me in just about everything!

Grammar

Grammar is essentially the basic foundation of how we communicate our ideas with one another; without a common, mutually understood system for organizing ideas, they can't be shared. This is why I consider grammar to be one of the most important and fundamental academic areas. Geometry

Similar to Algebra, I took Geometry early in high school and then have returned to the material several times since for standardized tests, most recently for the GRE. Geometry concepts really click for me, I think because I am definitely a visual learner. Being able to see the problem spatially really helps for me. Prealgebra

Prealgebra concepts are at basis for all of the math classes students encounter in high school, and beyond. Don't underestimate its importance! The fundamental nature of prealgebra ensures that it stays fresh, because it is constantly in use even in more advanced math.

Reading

Reading goes beyond just the SAT, ACT, and GRE--it is a crucial skill for all academic pursuits. Particularly important is the ability to read critically and make independent decisions about the information presented, rather than just accepting everything you read as fact. This is a skill that many of my professors in college emphasized and one that has been extremely beneficial to me in my academic endeavors.

Spanish

I studied Spanish growing up, all throughout middle and high school. My senior year, I took a mid-level University of Washington Spanish class. When I got to college, I tested out of all language requirements with Spanish, so I took Spanish literature instead. Reading books and writing essays in Spanish is tough! Music Theory

I started learning music early in my teenage years when I took up the guitar. Later, I began learning piano, and in college I began my academic study of music with a music theory class my freshman year. Piano lessons, voice work as part of music theory class, and the theory classes themselves have given me a firm understanding of the basics of music, and many more advanced topics as well.

Writing

Writing is one of my biggest strengths. It is important for almost any academic discipline, which makes it a crucial skill to have. I have been fortunate to have many great writing coaches throughout high school and college, and have practiced writing in numerous different styles, and for a variety of audiences. I am excited to share my experience and techniques with anyone who wants to learn.

English

English is one of those academic areas that really extends far beyond just a few specific classes. I've found writing and language skills to be essential for innumerable activities I've engaged in, such as documenting results of research, submitting a care plan for a patient at a hospital, and expressing my ideas about a philosopher's work that I read in class. Psychology

I studied psychology in college and hope to one day continue my studies in graduate school. My particular areas of expertise include clinical, cognitive, and social psychology--that being said, I have a wide variety of knowledge and experience with the field to share, ranging from a position as a research assistant in a psychology lab to a counseling internship at a mental hospital.

SAT Math

SAT Math is different from math class, and even ACT Math, because of the extreme importance of test-taking strategies. I think that, while the math concepts themselves are very important, the way you approach the test itself can make as big of a difference as how well you know the material. I have an equal emphasis on math knowledge and understanding of the test in my SAT Math tutoring.

GRE

The GRE is basically an older sibling of the SAT--the same concepts, but tested with more difficult questions. I'm confident that anyone can do well on the GRE; it just takes hard work, and what I like to call "smart" work--knowing how to take the test, what material is important, what types of questions to focus on, etc. With these tools, I was able to achieve very strong scores, and I believe you can too!

Proofreading

One of my duties as a psychology research assistant was to collaboratively write up the results, conclusions, and discussions relevant to research happening in the lab. Myself, faculty, graduate students, and other undergraduate research assistants would all work to varying degrees on different aspects of projects, and in particular, the writing. SAT Reading

Just like the SAT Math section, the SAT Reading section tests you on more than just your verbal skills--it tests you on how well prepared you are for the SAT itself, with all of its tricks and potential pitfalls. Similarly to the math, I believe that knowledge of the test--and good strategies to evade its designed tough spots--will be crucial to success. SAT Writing

The SAT Writing section is the hardest part of the test--but is also the most formulaic. With the right plan in mind going in, I was able to earn an 800 on this section, and I'm certain that anyone can achieve a score that they are satisfied with if they prepare properly.

SSAT

The SSAT is used to allow students to qualify for selective secondary schools, paving the way for success in college and beyond. It can be a great way for students to get started down the right path early. It also parallels many other standardized tests, including the SAT, in that test-taking strategies and knowledge of the test itself can be just as important as knowledge of the material. I focus on all components of the exam in my tutoring to help students achieve the best score they can.

ACT Reading

The hard part about the ACT reading section is paying attention to all of the little details in each passage. All of the information you need to answer every single question correctly is right in front of you--the tricky thing is making sure you see it. I know this is possible, because I received a perfect 36 on the ACT Reading section. I believe that anyone can score well on this part of the test with the right strategies and skills.

ACT English

English and writing have been among my academic strong suits for as long as I can remember. I scored a 35 on the ACT English section, and can help you to get a score you are happy with, too!

ACT Math

Math on standardized tests is always tricky. With some helpful study skills and review of basic concepts, I was able to earn a 34 on the ACT Math section.

ACT Science

The ACT Science section does not really require you to know too much about actual scientific fact, although some basic knowledge is helpful. What it really tests you on is your ability to interpret information presented in different forms (e.g., charts, paragraphs, graphs, and other data). Once you know how to interpret the information you are given, you can get all the questions right--I know, because I did.

Elementary Math

Elementary math concepts continue to apply to everything that comes afterward. I've kept this stuff fresh from classes, standardized tests, and my own tutoring.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a lot of experience with elementary school-aged kids dating back to when I used to coach youth basketball before college. In college, I worked as a teaching assistant in a split 2nd and 3rd grade classroom at a local elementary school for a year. That was when I really got a lot of experience helping kids with schoolwork, and I am glad to have that experience to lean on now.

Guitar

I've played the acoustic and acoustic-electric guitar for 10 years now. I took lessons myself throughout high school, and once I left for college I started teaching a few of my friends.

Basketball

I was the starting point guard and team captain of my college's Varsity Men's Basketball Team for two years. I also have a great deal of experience coaching--I've been a basketball camp counselor and have done independent one-on-one basketball coaching for going on five years now.

ISEE

The ISEE is used to help kids qualify for selective schools early in their educational career, helping to prepare them to continue learning in college and beyond. My encounters with logic have been varied and widespread, throughout several classes I took in college. The first was a class in formal logic my freshman year.
