1-12 Experienced English and Writing Teacher--1 year special ED.

Every student finds learning some kind of information difficult. Those of us who love numbers and working with mathematical equations, have a hard time writing essays and term papers. Those of us who love writing, find equations impossible. I have spent the last twelve years of my life learning strategies, techniques and motivational tools to help students learn. I have taught grades 1 through 12; the last 7 years I taught high school students English. Last year I was a high school special education teacher. I am comfortable writing and understanding IEPs; I am comfortable working with students with ADHD, dyslexia, aspergers, and socio-emotional problems. Some of my favorite and most rewarding times have been working with students in a tutoring environment (one to one), helping students become better writers, better readers and better students.

I recently moved to Seattle this summer to be back on the West Coast. My family lives in California and I wanted to have a closer trip to see them. Instead of a five our plane ride from Boston, I wanted a two and half hour plane ride from Seattle. As I make my transition to the Seattle Area, I wanted to spend some time tutoring students. I am comfortable working with elementary students to high school students. My specialty is writing and reading. I have many techniques, graphic organizers, and supports to make any student into a competent writer. I can especially give students confidence in writing for standardized tests. Elementary (K-6th)

My masters of education is in the elementary school level. I taught elementary school my first five years of teaching. I taught 4th graders for two year. I taught first and second for one year. I taught 6th grade for 2 years. During this time I was exposed to many strategies and teaching models that would help any student learn. I am very comfortable teaching all subjects to students in this range.

Study Skills

Teaching elementary and high school forces me to teach my students how to manage their time. From my classroom environment to my assignments sheets to assessments, the role of a teacher is to teach students to be organize, efficient and responsible. Study skills is all about managing your time, your ability, and the true expected outcomes of your efforts.

Special Needs

I studied to teach students with moderate disabilities. Disabilities such as ADHD, dyslexia, non-verbal disorders, socio-emotional issues, and students will severe motivational problems were found in students that I taught on a daily basis. I also learned how to write and teach from IEPs and 504s.

Chess

I loved playing chess every since I tore my ACL in 1998. I am not master, but I do have a solid understanding of the building blocks of chess. I also look forward to teaching these skills to anyone who would like to learn.

Poker

I've been playing poker for eight years. I know and understand the game. I've won a few tournaments too. Poker can be a great game to teach simple math....odds, multiplication, strategy, and higher level thinking.

Public Speaking

For twelve years I stood in front of a class and spoke. Many times throughout the course of a year, I was asked to stand in front of the school and deliver awards, speeches or give important information. Starting with a joke always gets attention and buy-in. Know what points you want to make and make them (many times).

ADD/ADHD

Since I started teaching elementary school in 1999, I have had to teach students with ADD/ADHD. I have come across many successful strategies to help students learn. Aspergers

Teaching students on the Aspergers spectrum is very challenging. Fortunately I've been exposed to many professional development classes that has taught me what students need who have Aspergers. Along with reading books and talking to colleges I've come to understand how difficult living with Aspergers is for students who go school surrounded with kids who are not on the spectrum. Dyslexia

I have taught a few students who are diagnosed with dyslexia. I empathize with these students because school can seem so difficult to digest. I believe using auditory activities as much as possible for students to understand material is important so student don't fall behind in their classes. The second skill of learning how to use phonetics and phoenemes to read on their own takes time, patience and compassion.
