Hello, I hope your day is going well.
I'm a senior at the University of Washington, currently finishing a degree in biochemistry and economics. I have years of experience in teaching and tutoring; I first started tutoring in high school as part of National Honor Society, moved into private tutoring my senior year (high school), and then started working for Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions at the end of my freshman year in college(a job I still hold). Since then, I've tutored or taught dozens of students SAT/PSAT/SAT subject test prep, as well as other academic subjects. Given my majors, I'm very comfortable in tutoring most science subjects as well as mathematics, but I also highly enjoy tutoring in the humanities as well, as I play several instruments, write novels and for the UW student newspaper, the Daily, and sing on the side. I also have experience in Spanish and Latin, and enjoy working on languages with students. Essentially, I can tutor in many subjects, with my greatest strengths being mathematics, English, writing, chemistry, history, biology, and standardized test prep.
Every student learns slightly differently, whether kinetically or visually. Every student has particular strengths and weaknesses. My years of tutoring experience have taught me that maintaining flexibility and cooperation in order to perfect a learning rapport with a student is the most important aspect of my job. Thus, in tutoring sessions, I strive to establish a friendly and professional common ground and adapt to the shifting requirements of the subject, be it geometry or biology. It's a true collaboration, as effective teaching/tutoring involves work from everyone involved. There's no one right way to find a solution to a problem; we work as a team in the pursuit of knowledge.
Finally, given my shifting academic commitments, I understand the need for flexibility in scheduling, so I am flexible when things come up. Conversely, I am very punctual and meticulous as a rule (hours of filling out lab reports rather necessitates attention to detail), so when I make an appointment I will stick to it unless something dire comes up, in which case I will give you several days' notice. I also am very prompt in returning emails and am almost clinically attached to my phone.
So if you need a tutor in any of the subjects I am certified in, feel free to get in touch! I'd be happy to answer any further questions you may have.
Regards,
Garrett B.
