Hello my name is Abby. I have always loved working with children and helping them learn new things in a creative way. I am a certified teacher who graduated from Central Washington University and recently moved back to Seattle after teaching in one of the top ten school districts in the US (USD 497 in Lawrence, KS).
For the past 2 1/2 years I have taught reading in small groups from grades kindergarten through fourth grade. By the end of each trimester, year after year, all of my students made leaps and bounds in their reading performance and confidence. The majority were on grade-level after only working with me for 3 months.
I believe in positive reinforcement throughout the learning process. A student's confidence in their own ability to read is first and foremost. By encouraging students to take things one step at a time and providing them with the tools they need to break things down into manageable chunks, my students are better prepared for continuing their entire education as lifetime learners.
I have been trained to assess a student's reading level as well as progress monitor their improvement regularly. Before beginning work with your student, the first step we will take is understanding where they are struggling: is it with their phonetics, comprehension, fluency, or vocabulary? After honing in on these key areas, I will go over a strategy plan with you and create milestones for us to work towards in our lessons. Like with any skill learned at a young age, practicing at home is always a plus: I typically like to send students home with books that are appropriate for their reading level to practice on their own and with their parents.
I have many fun and engaging lessons to help reinforce a skill until it is mastered. My schedule is flexible - I can work with your student at your convenience.
Sincerely,
Abby
