Experience:

For the past 3 years I've been working with UW students on computer science and math courses. Starting in 2012 I also received calls for community college and high school math and Java courses.

2004-2009 I tutored math while completing my bachelor's from UW.

I only work part time as a coder due to an injury and tutor whenever possible. Sometimes I'm unable to take tutoring jobs due to these limitations.

Most effective tutoring locations seem to be coffee shops and study rooms. In-home tutoring can be arranged as long as we have internet access. I use technology to teach which saves a lot of time and money!

I've worked with students who hate school, students with learning disabilities and students of all ages with no problems.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Java

I tutor java and very familiar with Washington universities and what is expected in Java classes. I'm able to break down the concepts so you can read through chapters quicker and concentrate on coding. Tutoring includes the Eclipse tutorial.

Web Design

I think the best method for newer students is to learn HTML, CSS and other script languages. This way you do not have to rely on applications such as DreamWeaver, FrontPage etc. some people have an easier time learning these applications; however, it still is more beneficial to spend the time and learn basic coding. The other advantage is that your website will be unique since it is designed from scratch, vs. limited ready-made templates, which are used by thousands of websites.
