I have over 12 years of tutoring experience, have been formally trained as a tutor, and have even won a National Tutor of the Year award for my work with one education company. I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Washington with degrees in Linguistics and Psychology, and have some graduate school experience in English literature from Rutgers University in New Jersey.

I have worked with students ranging from 1st grade to adults, and most often tutor students in Math (from grade school up to trigonometry/Pre-Calculus) and English. I tutor very interactively, and focus on customizing my tutoring for the student's particular needs. I can help with homework, study skills, or enrichment activities to go beyond the classroom. I particularly enjoy helping students discover that they actually CAN be good at the subject that is challenging them, provided they work hard and ask lots of questions.

I am also one of those rare individuals who love standardized tests, and I have tutoring experience in the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, ISEE, and SSAT. I have tutored all components of each of the tests, and have scored at least in the 95th percentile on all of them. No two students are the same, so I customize each test prep session according to the students needs, goals, and time available.

Carrie’s subjects

ACT English

Although I tutor students in all subjects of the ACT, I especially love teaching ACT English. Many students are initially frustrated because it's been so long since they were taught grammar in school, but systematic review helps a lot! I teach my students the punctuation and grammar rules the ACT tests, how to check for wordiness, and how to tackle the tricky organization questions.

ACT Math

I have been tutoring all subjects on the ACT since 2003, and have helped students from all different scoring ranges. The ACT is one of my favorite standardized tests, and I love to make it less scary for my students. For the math section, I teach test strategy and time management in addition to the math content knowledge required.

ACT Reading

I've tutored all subjects on the ACT since 2003. ACT Reading is about accuracy and speed. 4 passages and 40 questions is a lot to do in 35 minutes! I teach my students what they should be skimming for in the passages so that they don't waste valuable time on material that's not likely to get tested. I also cover strategies for attacking the questions and for avoiding common wrong answer traps.

ACT Science

I've tutored all subjects on the ACT since 2003. ACT Science is more about reading graphs and understanding how experiments are put together than it is about actual science knowledge. In my tutoring sessions, I teach students techniques for getting information reliably and quickly from the figures. We also work on finding the relevant parts of the scientific method. Finally, since pacing is the key on this section, we work on developing speed while maintaining accuracy.

Algebra 1

I have 10+ years experience tutoring the material from Algebra I. I love helping students see the logic behind algebra, and I believe in repetition to build confidence. I can also help students prepare for the Washington State EOC exam.

Algebra 2

I have 10+ years experience teaching the material from Algebra 2. I love breaking down difficult concepts into step by step processes that students can reliably execute.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored K-6th grade students in English (reading, vocabulary, and writing), math, and science. I also specialize in test prep and have ample experience with the ISEE and SSAT. Some of my elementary students are looking for help with schoolwork, while others are looking for enrichment tutoring that will help them either catch up to their peers or work ahead of their grade level.

Elementary Math

I have tutored K-6th grade students in English (reading, vocabulary, and writing), math, and science. I also specialize in test prep and have ample experience with the ISEE and SSAT. Some of my elementary students are looking for help with schoolwork, while others are looking for enrichment tutoring that will help them either catch up to their peers or work ahead of their grade level.

English

I have completed coursework for an English major at the University of Washington and PhD coursework in English at Rutgers University. I can tutor reading, literature, grammar, and writing. I have significant experience helping students write and revise papers.

ESL/ESOL

I have served as a tutor and conversation partner for international students and non-native English speakers. I also have a degree in Linguistics and significant coursework in English literature.

Geometry

I have tutored Geometry for close to nine years and enjoy teaching students how to make questions less intimidating. I help my students learn formulas and apply them in situations of increasing complexity. I can also help students prepare for the Washington State EOC exam.

GMAT

I have significant experience teaching the GMAT, including the new Integrated Reasoning section. I've worked with students on all sections of the GMAT, and particularly enjoy helping students make sense of the Data Sufficiency and Critical Reasoning questions. My students have ranged from those who haven't done math in years to those who are shooting for a near perfect score. My own scores are above the 95th percentile.

Grammar

I am a Linguistics major from the University of Washington, and am one of those rare people who enjoy talking about grammar. In tutoring, I use a variety of explanations to make sure that students understand the grammatical relationships between words, which helps students see progress more quickly.

GRE

I have significant experience teaching both the old and the new GRE. I've worked with students on Verbal, Quantitative, and the Writing assessment. My students have ranged from those who haven't done math in years to those who are shooting for a near perfect score. My own scores are a 170 Verbal and 169 Quantitative.

ISEE

I have tutored the ISEE and SSAT for about nine years, at each of the different levels. I work with students to familiarize them with the test format and test management strategies. We also work on content areas, reviewing math facts, learning vocabulary, and practicing critical reading and essay writing.

Literature

I have completed coursework for an English major at the University of Washington, and some coursework for a PhD in English literature from Rutgers University, all with straight As. I enjoy teaching strategies for active reading.

LSAT

I have significant experience teaching the LSAT at all levels. I have worked with students scoring in the 130s, all the way to one student who made her way up to repeated 178s. I particularly enjoy helping students develop clear methods so that they can proceed quickly and confidently through the questions. My own LSAT score is in the mid-170s.

Prealgebra

I have 10+ years experience tutoring students in Prealgebra, and enjoy helping students see how math rules make sense. I believe in customizing my tutoring to what the student needs, which may include a math refresher to fill in some gaps that may exist.

Precalculus

I enjoy teaching Precalculus. This can be a tough class for many students, especially if they had a hard time in Algebra II. I enjoy helping students develop strong algebra skills so that the more complex parts of Precalculus are easier to conquer. I've tutored Precalculus at both the high school and college level.

Proofreading

I have a degree in Linguistics from the University of Washington and have a passion for grammar. I have helped many students revise their writing and develop their own proofreading skills. My ultimate goal as a tutor is to help students learn to proofread their own works, but I am also happy to work with students in the short term on a particular paper or set of papers.

PSAT

I've taught the SAT/PSAT since 2003, and have ample experience helping students raise their scores. Whether you are looking for a general overview that will make the PSAT less intimidating, or are looking for high scores to qualify for the National Merit scholarship competition, I can help you out. National Merit hopefuls may be happy to hear that I've helped numerous SAT students achieve scores above 2350 on the real SAT.

SAT Math

I have taught all subjects of the SAT for over 10 years. For the math section, I focus on test strategy interspersed with content review. I have worked with students from all levels of math, and I vary my approach according to each students starting point, goal score, and time available.

SAT Reading

I have taught all subjects of the SAT for over 10 years. For the reading section, I focus mostly on the reading comprehension passages, since that's where the majority of the points are. I teach strategies for reading the passages themselves and for answering the questions. For the Sentence Completion questions, I focus on a mix of vocabulary learning and question strategies.

SAT Writing

I have taught all subjects of the SAT for over 10 years. For the Writing section, I split the time between the essay and the multiple choice. For the essay, I make sure students are ready for whatever prompt they might receive and I target specifically what each student needs to improve. For the multiple choice grammar questions, we review the rules students likely haven't been explicitly taught in years, then work on identifying those rules in the context of SAT questions.

SSAT

I have tutored the ISEE and SSAT for about nine years, at each of the different levels. I work with students to familiarize them with the test format and test management strategies. We also work on content areas, reviewing math facts, learning vocabulary, and practicing critical reading and essay writing.

Study Skills

I have over ten years of experience tutoring students with varying degrees of study skills. I am comfortable teaching note-taking skills, organization techniques, and test preparation skills. I can help students plan their time well, organize their backpack and binders, or can help them stay on task and focused while working.

TEAS

I have tutored students for the Math, English, and Reading portions of the TEAS test. For the math section, I find that students benefit most from developing skills with percents, fractions, and decimals, which are heavily tested subject areas. For the Reading section, I focus equally on reading passages and on the informational source comprehension questions (reading maps, charts, indices, advertisements, and so on). For the English section, I review parts of speech and other grammar terminology to make sure students are well prepared for the section.

Trigonometry

I always enjoy teaching Trig. For many students, learning the unit circle at first seems like it will require a lot of memorization. I love showing students how they really only need to memorize a couple of things, and the rest of the unit circle can be filled out by understanding how each component fits together. I also enjoy showing students how other tricky parts of trig (like graphing transformations of trig functions) are doable if they break the process down step-by-step.

Vocabulary

Having tutored the SAT, ACT, and GRE, and having studied Linguistics, Latin, English, and a few other languages in college, I've acquired a sizable vocabulary. I tutor vocabulary for standardized tests using roots, word groups, and sentence context. For non-native English speakers, I make sure that the vocabulary I teach is at the appropriate level and that I also teach how to use the words idiomatically. For younger children, I make sure to give age-appropriate context and to reinforce the words often.

Very Helpful. Carrie has worked around my hectic summer schedule of job, training, and school. She outshines any tutor I have had thus far. In college, the academic tutors they assigned us athletes were there in body but struggled to help when encountering challenging math questions. Carrie, on the other hand, is really knowledgeable and doesn't waste time figuring out what I don't understand. I really appr ...
