I started tutoring at a public middle school while in college. When I went on to be a Teaching Assistant at Berkeley, I found that some of my most rewarding teaching experiences came during individual meetings with students in "office hours." Simultaneously, it was clear that students got a big boost of confidence, whether from finally grasping a difficult concept from class or from tightening the argument of a paper. As a tutor, I aim to draw out and build upon a student's existing strengths, for a measure of confidence can go a long way in addressing areas that may be weaker.
At Berkeley, I received an "Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award," given to only 10% of teaching assistants. In anonymous evaluations, students frequently described me as approachable, patient, and responsive to individual students' needs. I received my PhD in History in May 2012.
I currently teach freshman writing at PLU in Tacoma. I have also taught GRE and SAT prep and am particularly equipped for tutoring on the verbal and writing sections, as well as general test-taking strategies. I am competent at math for the purposes of these tests, but if you need a lot of help with the math itself, a different tutor would be better suited to help.
Lastly, if you are considering grad school in the humanities, I can give you knowledgeable and candid advice on the prospects and process.
