I have traveled all over the world and love the arts and children. I believe that I blend a fun approach to learning with high expectations for the student to achieve success.
My experience as a docent in a Fine Arts Center gave me the ability to project a fast and interesting lesson to all kinds of people, young and old.
I like to give the chance for small successes that can be built on and amplified over time to develop self-esteem. For instance, I can teach a child organizational skills which will help in daily life at school and home.
My particular expertise is in the field of remedial reading, and it is sometimes amazing what a difference a few months can make to fix a problem.

Vocabulary

I am really literate, and read and write daily so my skills are always improving.I love the idea of giving students a bank of new words to improve their speaking and writing.

Reading

I have taken graduate level remedial reading courses and have tutored and taught this subject for many years. I hope to inspire the love of reading by overcoming the student's problems.

Writing

I am always happy to work with a student who does not like to write, because it involves creativity in motivating that person to express themselves, perhaps for the first time. Everyone has stories inside them. It is thrilling to get them on paper.

English

I can provide English tutoring for writing or the spoken language.

Elementary Math

Math is a stumbling block for many children, and many times they must learn to like it again. I hope that I will be the person who helps them overcome their difficulties. I have taught Elementary Math successfully for many years. Patience and good humor help!

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified elementary teacher, licensed in Washington State. I have over 20 years of teaching experience. I earned my teaching credentials from Colorado College, Colorado Springs.

Phonics

I have taken graduate courses in remedial reading, and worked as a teacher and tutor using phonics.

Study Skills

I have taught students the art of organizing their study skills for twenty years. I begin by asking them for an overview of the coursework, and then demonstrate how to pinpoint what is needed to understand and master each subject. Students learn how to take notes and store them for future review. They also learn how to use corrected work to analyze where their difficulties lie.
