Learning is a passion, one that I love to share through discussion and teamwork. My favorite subjects are Story subjects (English, History, Social Studies, Writing, Religious Studies), which provide ample opportunities to address reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills. I also teach elementary and middle school math. I approach all my subjects with energy and excitement, and am really invested in a student's positive relationship with the subject material.
My teaching method is to first understand how my student is experiencing the material. By understanding the student's thought processes, I can best work with him or her to develop a framework for tackling the subject matter. What works for one student may be vastly different from what works for another, and the goal is to encourage the student's own initiative and problem solving. Where there is a complete lack of understanding, I use different routes to approach an issue until one makes sense, then we build on that together. My style is encouraging because I want my students to really own their learning and work. With the pride of accomplishment comes the desire for more!
I recently graduated with general honors from the University of Chicago, where I majored in South Asian Languages and Civilizations and received departmental honors for my senior thesis on Hindu goddess iconography, Indian nationalism, and women's empowerment in India. I've lived in India for a total of nine months since 2008 and speak, read, and write Hindi. I also minored in Human Rights.
I have tutored elementary school reading and writing in the Chicago Public Schools (2008), as well as reading, writing, critical thinking, study skills, Literature and History at the high school level (2011). Additionally, I worked as an elementary school substitute teacher and as a high school TA for Early World History, US History, and AP US History (2009-10). My lecture on my thesis material (feminism in South Asian religious iconography) was part of the Tea Room Lecture Series at the University of Chicago (2010), and as part of the Sadie Nash mentor program I helped prepare high school students for a mock trial competition (2013).
In addition to Hindi, I studied French for over four years, scoring a 5 on the national AP exam and in the 700s on the SAT II. I have additional materials and books of my own for both French and Hindi tutoring.
With regard to religion, I've done extensive coursework on Buddhism and Hinduism and have incidental knowledge about Islam as a part of my South Asian studies and living in India. I also attended an independent Catholic school where the religion courses were academically rigorous and intellectually challenging, and focused on philosophy, history and contemporary relevance.
I cook and bake food from all over the world. I love photography and have experience developing and printing black and white photos in the darkroom.
