Hi, my name is Annie! I am a 31-year-old professional tutor and experienced classroom teacher. I have a BA in Biology from Pomona College in Claremont, CA (graduating cum laude with a 3.8 GPA) and a Masters of Environmental Studies from the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. I have been teaching and tutoring middle, high school, and college students for 6 years, and have been a full-time professional tutor for the last year-and-a-half. I have had much success working with students from a wide range of Seattle schools including The Bush School, Seattle Prep, Bishop Blanchet, Garfield, Holy Names Academy, and Forest Ridge.
My teaching experience ranges from teaching environmental education to groups of middle school students in the Pacific Northwest, to teaching marine biology on Catalina Island and in the Caribbean, to teaching ecology (in both English and Spanish) to high school students (and working with them on land tortoise research) in the Galapagos Islands. Furthermore I have thrived as a full-time classroom science teacher, occasionally teaching math and literature classes as well. Additionally, I have been trained as a SAT and GRE teacher by the Princeton Review and have had much success helping students prepare for and excel on these tests. Currently I tutor students for these tests as well as for biology, chemistry, algebra, geometry, trig, pre-calc, writing, and literature.
I am passionate about meeting students at their own level and working to help them engage with, understand, and excel at the subject at hand. I look forward to working with you!
Algebra is definitely one of my favorite students to tutor! When I work with algebra students, I strive to meet my students where they are, identify concepts they lack, and help them fill in the gaps in order to find success.
Algebra builds significantly upon what came before, so establishing a solid foundation is key. By identifying and addressing gaps, practicing key problem types, infusing important study skills, and maintaining a positive motivating presence, my students begin to appreciate and even enjoy this challenging subject. They succeed in the subject and find confidence in their math skills.
The Algebra 2 student I am currently tutoring on a regular basis has raised her average test scores substantially, and her comprehension of the material as well as her confidence in her math skills have sky-rocked! When I began tutoring her in September she was struggling to get C's, but on her last two tests she scored a 98% and 99% respectively. It has been incredible not only to see her excel, but to watch as her math confidence becomes healthy and strong.
There are numerous ways to explain any give math concept. I work to explain difficult concepts in the way or ways that jive with the unique individual I am working with. I stress practice, practice, and practice, and meet each student where he or she is at, patiently working with him or her to meet or exceed goals.
I graduated cum laude from Pomona College (of the 5-College Consortium in Claremont, CA) with a GPA of 3.8 in 2003. Since then I have engaged a range of biological research work including neuro-ecology research on marine invertebrates, and field research on shrimp and Galapagos land tortoises. My masters in Environmental Studies from the Evergreen State College has further contributed to my biological training.
Additionally, I bring with me significant experience as a classroom and field biology teacher. I have 2-years experience teaching marine biology to middle and high school students, 1-year experience teaching ecology to high school students, and 1-year experience teaching biology, including genetics, plant and animal anatomy and physiology and cellular structure, and neuroscience, to high school students in the classroom.
Further I love tutoring high school students in biology and AP biology, as well as college students in Biology 101.
I have a solid grasp of the key concepts covered in high school Bio and AP Bio as well as college biology 101. I am able to work with students to help them comprehend challenging material so that they can successfully apply it to tests and understand why and how it is important in the real world!
Geometry is definitely one of my favorite students to tutor! When I work with geometry students, I strive to meet my students where they are, identify concepts they lack, and help them fill in the gaps in order to find success.
Geometry, perhaps more than any other subject, builds upon what came before, so establishing a solid foundation is key. By identifying and addressing gaps, practicing key problem types, infusing important study skills, and maintaining a positive motivating presence, my students begin to appreciate and even enjoy this challenging subject. They succeed in the subject and find confidence in themselves.
I am familiar with the new Revised GRE and have even been trained to teach it by the Princeton Review. When I sat for the practice Revised GRE, I got a score range equivalence of 750-800 in both Math and Reading (though the scores are now on a different scale).
I love working with adults (both young and old) preparing to take the GRE and go to graduate school as I know graduate school is a huge milestone in people's lives.
I typically ask that students take a graded pre-test before I work with them (which I can direct them to on-line) so we both have a baseline of their performance and have a better idea of where to focus our time and energy. Depending on the students needs and goals, I work with students on specific Revised GRE test-taking strategies, specific problem type strategies, concept review/learning, as well as essay-writing practice and tips. Generally I assign/suggest specific homework after each meeting to both build-on what we practiced that session, and well as prepare for the next session. Additionally, I encourage students to take several full-length practice tests (on the computer!) so as to mentally prepare themselves for the real thing and so that we can continue to identify and work-on trouble spots. I can focus on math, reading, writing, or all three, depending on the needs of the student.
I am proficient in Spanish, taking 4-years in high school, 3-years in college, and spending 1 and a half years studying and teaching in Ecuador. In fact, I have eight months experience teaching ecology and biology to Ecuadorian students in Spanish!
I am particularly interested in working with Spanish 1 students in middle and high school, helping to make sure they get off to a great start in their language learning endeavors. I can work with them on basic vocabulary, conversation, verb conjugation, homework, and Spanish projects.
Out of a five star review, I'd give Anne L. 10 stars! FANTASTIC tutor! — If you want to hire a math tutor, look no further than Anne L.. She is fantastic. My daughter, (who has ADD), had to take a semester of Algebra 2 on-line, and complete the course in one month. It seemed like an impossible task, but Anne took each concept one step at a time, and explained it in a way my daughter could understand. She was always on time and extremely flexible to give my daughter the ...
