My name is Ryan and I am currently a PhD student studying history at the University of Washington in Seattle, where I also received my Masters. I graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kapa from the University of California, San Diego, where I studied political science and history.

Over the last five years, I have worked as a teaching assistant at UW, and as a tutor and after school instructor in California public schools. I have experience working with students of all ages in reading, writing, history, English, SAT and ACT prep, and algebra. I am comfortable working in both one-on-one and group teaching environments.

My teaching methodology is based primarily on attempting to guide students to find their own answers and think critically about how they find solutions to different problems. I hope not only to encourage students to become independent thinkers, but also to provide them with the tools necessary to gain confidence in challenging subjects.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Writing

I have taught writing for over five years in California and Washington with students ranging from middle school to college. I have been an instructor and teaching assistant at the University of Washington since 2010. I work with college students to complete strong research papers and other pieces of writing. As a tutor, I work with high school students completing their research papers, creative writing, and college admissions essays.
