I am a Class-A chess player and have played in tournaments. I generally open with the Latvian Gambit and play Sicilian Defense. I have read chess books (my favorite being My System by Aaron Nimzovich) and studied positions and I also have played 5-minute chess.
I approach the game as a fun, learning, and combinatoric exercise. I don't like to feel crushed when I lose or feel like a jerk when I win. I hope my student (players) will look at the game as a exercise in planning, strategy, and fortitude, as well as bravery, all in the spirit of fun and learning. I believe that playing chess will enable one to be a more careful thinker.
I all but completed a BS degree in mathematics from the University of Washington when I became a writer instead. However, I keep my hand in math as a tutor because it is such a beautiful subject.
