Music History

I have a thorough knowledge of music history having taken a large number of graduate and doctoral level classes in this subject area, as well as a broad spectrum undergraduate course covering music history. I have taken specific courses in 20th Century, Romantic Period, Classical Period, Baroque Period, Renaissance Period, and Medieval Period, as well as specific courses on the music of Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler. As well as knowledge of the history of Western Classical music, I am also well versed in Jazz History and 20th century contemporary music.

Music Theory

I am well versed in music theory, having easily passed the undergraduate, masters level, and doctoral level entrance exams at some of the most prestigious music schools in the country. I also use music theory in my every day teaching of jazz theory and improvisation for instrumental instruction. I also have a working knowledge of Baroque Counterpoint (ie: J.S. Bach).

Trombone

I hold a Doctorate of Music in Trombone Performance from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. I have had a number of very successful students over the past 10 years, including quite a few All-State students in North Carolina, Illinois, and Indiana. I have also taught students who have gone on to major in music at various 4 year state universities. As a performer, I have been a part of ensembles who have been nominated for 3 Grammy Awards, as well as having won 5 Downbeat Awards.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
