I have a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and Intercultural Studies. I have worked at several different community colleges and at one university in NJ and WA. I’ve taught classes from beginner to advanced levels and have experience teaching grammar, writing, phonology, reading, listening and discussion/speaking classes.

In addition to completing the objectives for the students that I tutor, I feel that part of my role is to build confidence in my students. Learning a second language is difficult. I’ve taken Spanish and Chinese in the past, so I can speak from my own personal experience. I am a native speaker, however English was my second language. I can relate to my students and I see myself as a role model to inspire students to keep studying and working hard. I am also bi-cultural and that has helped me to relate to my students and my students to me.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have a master's in teaching English as a foreign language. I have experience in teaching reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation, speaking, and listening to those who want to improve their English.

Grammar

I have a master's in teaching English as a foreign language. Throughout my career, I have had much experience in teaching grammar as it is infused with writing.

Proofreading

I have a master's in teaching English as a foreign language and have much experience teaching writing. Part of being a writing instructor is reading and rereading student work and proofreading areas of improvement. Those areas include spelling, punctuation, word choice, sentence structure, and grammar.

Reading

I have a master's in teaching English as a foreign language. Although most of my experience is in helping non-native speakers improve their reading, the principles are identical to helping native speakers who also need help improving their reading. I have experience teaching both native and non-native speakers.

TOEFL

I have a master's in teaching English as a foreign language. I also have experience writing test questions for exams like the TOEFL.

Vocabulary

I have a master's in teaching English as a foreign language. Many of my students have had a need to improve their vocabulary so that they have a broader base of words to choose from when they write. In my writing classes, I have the students work on word choice and word families to broaden their vocabulary.

Writing

I have a master's in teaching English as a foreign language. Although most of my experience is in helping non-native speakers improve their writing, the principles are identical to helping native speakers who also need help improving their writing. I have experience teaching both native and non-native speakers.
