I am a self-taught artist blessed with a gift of seeing and a passion for painting and studying the nature of things. I have painted in a variety of media with occasional sculpture for over 40 years, and I am building my representation as a gallery and exhibition artist in Bellevue, Kirkland, Kenmore and Gig Harbor. I've also won three places in the 2012 American Art Awards competition.

I teach the basics and beyond, by teaching to see what is in front of you and drawing from Life. Regardless of one's own style or imagination, the fundamentals of light and value, color and chroma, form, movement and composition are essential for continual progress, and all are ultimately dependent upon hands-on practice.

There are three basic things involved in drawing and painting:

First and most obvious is what you see, in terms of light and shadow, noticing the range of values, colors, and overall relationships of forms and spaces.

The second thing involved is what you think you see, such as edges that become invisible because positive and negative space are of equal value, or your left-brain wanting to "fill in things you know are there."

Thirdly, whether you are drawing or painting, is how you put onto paper or canvas what you see, which has much to do with technique, but actually more with seeing.

What I do is help to remove number two, what you think you see. This is arguably the greatest stumbler. By teaching to see what you see AND what you don't see, my students have a more practical, self-motivated and creative approach to whatever art they endeavor.

I teach within the age ranges of teen to adult, beyond the point at which the student begins to observe nature, rather than make the characteristic left-brain symbolic pictograms associated with early childhood drawings.

Besides the relaxing and therapeutic aspects not often associated with drawing and painting, my seeing approach provides the most grounded foundation for the creative child in you.

Corporate Training:

My drawings and paintings have shown in four Seattle-area galleries, as well as many current juried shows. I also won three places in the 2012 American Art Awards in three different categories. Having been self-taught, I have gone through the anguish of students learning and practicing the classic foundational studies, which I believe are essential both to beginning artists and graduates who still need the on-going practice. I know the stumbling blocks and how do get through them. References can be supplied on request.

Economics is properly a praxeological science (pertaining to human action), and therefore must use a different method than that of the empirical sciences, i.e. mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc., which rely on experimentation and observable data. As such, for sound economics, mathematics is neither necessary nor a requirement. Learn sound and consistent economics that includes no equations. With over 38 years of study in Austrian Economics, I have taught, spoken and led discussions, and collaborated for 11 years on a card game that teaches it. I will cover the groundwork of a much greater study with practically unlimited resources. This will complement and bring better perspective on what is actually taught in most colleges and universities--and why.

Being self-taught in various painting media, I have gained mastery through the trials and the long-term practice that my students face. My on-going juried gallery and festival shows are testament to this mastery. The enthusiasm and gratitude of my current students reflect by ability to address all the issues relating to the classic fundamentals of light, color, form and composition, while respecting individuality and style in any medium.

I teach beginning and intermediate piano, for young people and adults. While the ability to read the score is required, I also teach improvisation, using the Pattern Play series, as this helps improve creativity. I require the student to have a well-functioning and tuned instrument. I teach only students who want to learn and are willing to practice, not students whose parents want them to learn for whatever reason.

Self-taught. My work speaks for itself.

Very informative and great technique — Phil was wonderful with my girls and gave them really great insight into the world of sketching. He taught them all about the different materials they used and will use. There was a wealth of information in everything he taught them. He was quick to pick up on the different learning styles of my two girls and continued to be very encouraging of them. He is an amazing artist and appears to really h ...
