Writing well is critical to success in school and in life. It is my passion to bring out "the writer within" in every student with whom I work. The one-on-one relationship means that the student will progress more quickly and thoroughly than in a class situation. I develop a strong working relationship with each student as I walk them through the writing process, from idea origination to finished document. I use graphic organizers to help the student focus on the elements of their topic and develop their ideas clearly, concisely, and coherently.
I have a Bachelor's in English from Trinity College; I spent my sophomore year at Oxford University, Oxford England, where I studied English and Composition. My Master's degree is from George Mason University. I have been a Writer/Editor for 15 years, and a tutor for 3 years.
I love the personal interaction of tutoring. I have many testimonials from satisfied clients.
College admissions has become increasingly competitive. I will walk the student through the questions on the application in a way that will resonate with the admissions counselor. For the all-important college essay, I will work with the student using graphic organizers to focus on the prompt. A revision and further editing will make the essay stand out from the rest.
I have a bachelor's in English, and have worked as a Writer/Editor and as a teacher. I have tutored for the past 3 years. I bring a strong writing background to the task of completing college applications. One-on-one work is the best way to optimize the end result in the admissions process.
The study of English is one of discovery. When a student is well-versed in the subject, they can communicate orally or in writing in a way that makes others understand exactly what they mean. The correct usage of English marks the educated person, whether they are describing a work of literature or giving directions on how to bake the perfect loaf of bread.
Grammar is the step-child of good writing. Students are often stymied by the rules of grammar. I have found the book, "Grammar for Smart People" to be an excellent resource for all grade levels. Once grammar is de-mystified, the student can progress in his or her own usage correctly and without anxiety.
Literature is life on the page. My tutoring shares my passion for literature. My Bachelor's degree is in English; I studied at Oxford University in Oxford, England; and I worked as a Writer/Editor for 15 years. My approach to the teaching of Literature is to immerse the student in different types of writing and different authors.
Proofreading is an essential step in the writing process. I work with my students to spot errors in their writing and the writing of others (it is easier to find someone else's mistakes). I have my students learn the standard proofreading marks; they are a short-hand way of conveying what needs to be changed. I encourage the use of Spell Check and Grammar Check, but I do not allow students to use them in place of careful reading.
The SAT can be anxiety-producing and nerve-wracking. My job as a tutor is to have the student become comfortable with the different types of questions and work through to the correct answers. Timing is also important, and my students learn to pace themselves to the time allotted.
I love to write, and I seek to share that passion with my students. Writing is just thinking on paper, and students need to shed the misconception that writing is hard and that there is some mysterious way to write "right." In my tutorials, I use freewriting as a way to stimulate the brain-hand connection. I then move on to expository, persuasive, narrative, and descriptive writing.
