As a homeschooling mom and tutor for the last 9 years, I've learned that I can't be successful until I understand how each student learns. This understanding helps me present lessons that will make the light bulbs over their heads click on! I can help your student with homework during the school year, or we can develop a summer learning plan to prepare for a calm, confident return to school. I tutor any K-8 subject, and writing up to college level. My passion is elementary/middle school math, so bring on those fractions and decimals! We'll break it all down to the basics. I promise, it will get easier for everyone.
Most importantly, I have a knack for working with ADD/ADHD students. In my opinion, these are some of the brightest and most capable kids out there. It's just a matter of finding their learning style and rebuilding their confidence. Even though these students appear to charge through life, they often suffer from low confidence and frustration. Together, we will work on gathering up all the scattered ideas, broken pencils, torn papers, cluttered backpacks, lost books, and sloppy work. Yes - I've been there.
We can work on individual assignments, but I believe it is important to build strong foundations. Your child won't benefit from completing a fractions assignment until he REALLY understands what fractions ARE. It's that way with all subjects. Let's work for that understanding!
I homeschooled my ADHD son from kindergarten through 8th grade. I've put enormous effort into understanding the condition by attending seminars, reading, and researching. Of course, every situation is different, but my approach remains the same...calm. In my experience with my son and with other students, math and writing seem to cause the most frustration. For writing, I use graphic organizers to help the student map out ideas and stay on track. ADD/ADHD kids are usually brilliant writers, but they don't know it because their thoughts get all jumbled up! I can help with that. For math, I use several different teaching methods, but I tend to be most successful when we start with the basics. Mastering the basics gives confidence, and confidence leads to the learning of more complex mathematical concepts. If a pre-algebra student makes a multiplication error on a problem, but otherwise completes the operation correctly, he probably just needs to master his multiplication facts. You might be surprised to hear that your child is good at math, but just needs to tune up a few things! Imagine that! I will gladly work with your child's pediatrician, teacher, or IEP/504 counselor to make sure we are moving in the right direction as a team.
I have extensive K-6 teaching experience as a home-schooling mother of two. Both of my children consistently test high on required state exams, and I am regularly hired by parents to develop targeted learning plans for their children. I am familiar with the Washington OSPI Common Core. Currently, I am writing a book about how to develop learning plans for elementary ADD/ADHD students.
I have been a certified Jazzercise instructor for 7 years. I teach regular format classes, and specialty classes such as pilates, ballet, and circuit. I work with clients on reaching specific fitness goals, including weight loss and core strengthening.
I have extensive public speaking experience that includes teaching Jazzercise 4 times/week. I guide my classes from a stage, using a headset microphone. To be successful, I must communicate clearly with both words and body language. 30% of my students speak English as a second language, so I work hard to be an effective teacher. Additionally, I have offered interview preparation classes to adults for the last 2 years.
I am qualified to teach in the area of Special Needs because I have been doing so for the last 8 years. My own son has ADHD, and I successfully homeschooled him through 8th grade. I currently tutor 4 children with ADD/ADHD, one with Dyspraxia, one with Dysgraphia, and two with autism. (Not all from WyzAnt). I feel confident that I can help these children.
Very Patient and Kind — Shannon has been such a help for my son. She understands his attention issues and actually watches him to see where he struggles. Her great observation skills help her pinpoint where he needs help. She can present information in a way that he understands. She is wonderful at boosting his self-esteem which has suffered from his difficulty with math. Since working with Shannon his test scores h ...
