I was a licensed 7-12 Math and Physics teacher in Ohio. I am proficient (and experienced) in teaching/tutoring 3-12 Math through Algebra II, Science, Reading (Phonics), Physics, SAT, and ACT. I have also tutored Chem and Bio. My students improve their grades at school. My ACT and SAT students improve their scores. Tutoring offers me the opportunity to help students by assessing each one's strengths and using those to overcome any deficiencies. They learn to relate that which they already know to that which they must understand. They learn the fundamentals so they can apply them to new and different questions. The students know I care deeply about them and their achievement of success.

My background includes 40 years of Engineering, Marketing, Management and Sales plus eight recent years teaching H.S. Physics and Math before beginning tutoring as a full-time profession six years ago. In addition to tutoring I was a Kaplan SAT instructor for a year and just left 4 years 1/4-time teaching remedial classes in math (5th-6th grade level) and science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) to Veterans at a community college in Ohio. I left so I could move to Redmond and be with my families here.

ACT English

The student will be given strategies with which to attack each of the 5+ types of question found in the English section. For all ACT help, the student must be prepared to take practice tests or portions thereof between sessions with me. Questions missed will be explored and the reasoning behind correct answers explained. The student needs to have a previously unmarked copy of "The Real ACT Prep Guide 3rd Edition” containing 5 practice tests, bringing it to each session s/he has with me.

ACT Math

ACT math is quite straightforward (compared to SAT), much like typical school math. It requires knowledge of at least algebra I and geometry, with some algebra II, (as opposed to algebra I for SAT). The student will be shown an overall strategy, then several strategies based on the specific question type and the answers available.

ACT Reading

I help the student discover which of 6 strategies best fits their cognitive processes and gains them the best score. This requires at least 8 sessions to be done thoroughly, but can be reasonably well accomplished in 4.

ACT Science

I help the student understand the structure of the test and the strategy students have used to significantly increase their scores on this section. I also help them with tactics that are successful - and guide them through the process.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have gained graduate credit in tutoring/teaching phonics reading, basic writing and elementary math. For 3 years I have been tutoring 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students in math, phonics and writing (in addition to my H.S. and College students for the specific subjects I tutor). My education and background in the Sciences gives me capability to tutor/teach general science as well as the named sciences.

Elementary Math

As an ex H.S. Math teacher I am obviously versed in math from the rudiments onward. What is not so obvious is that when I began tutoring I was also trained in the methods of teaching young students these rudiments through the use of manipulatives and objects including "things", number cards, Cuisenaire rods, touch math, tables, flashcards, etc.
I interact with the child to find "where they are", what interests them and how we can use this information to best help the child learn the math necessary to his/her age/grade level (or beyond).

ISEE

As a test prep expert in SAT & ACT, qualified in SSAT and having successfully tutored ISEE, I am well able to prepare students to get their best possible score. I teach general concepts for best strategies and tactics used in taking these multiple-choice tests in each area tested, use practice tests to work on specifics, and adjust my teaching based on the student's individual cognitive style and capability. After the first lesson, the student must purchase a test prep book and practice tests plus be prepared to do "homework" between lessons. This will include writing essays for critique. The amount of time required depends on student's present knowledge base in math, math concepts, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing capability. Student will achieve to capability and improve old scores if they work hard as instructed.

Marketing

Adding 15 graduate hours of business pre-reqs for an MBA (never completed) to my BA I have the equivalent of a BBA. My 12+ years of marketing rising from an inside salesperson through advertising literature, management of marketing communications, management of market research, culminating in product management of a $100M line of test and measurement products provides me with hands-on expertise in the area of Marketing. Subsequent interest in and study of marketing concepts keeps me abreast of latest developments and best practices in the marketing area.

Phonics

I have been trained in and tutored the phonic sounds of letters, blends, etc. along with combining sounds to form words. My students have been able to begin to read after about 10 lessons.

Physical Science

As developer of a quick (25 hour) general science survey course for adults covering physics, chemistry, and biology, and a successful tutor in these three subjects, I feel confident in tutoring general science for grade 3-12 "science" students.

SAT Math

SAT math requires "mathematical thinking" outside that found in typical school tests ("thinking outside the box") even though the math itself only requires algebra I (as opposed to ACT which needs algebra II but is more straightforward). It is here that SAT tests critical thinking. The student will be shown an overall strategy, then several strategies based on the specific question type and the answers available. For all SAT help, the student must be prepared to take practice tests or portions thereof between sessions with me. Questions missed will be explored and the reasoning behind correct answers explained. The student needs to have a previously unmarked copy of "The Official Sat Study Guide 3rd Edition” containing 10 practice tests, bringing it to each session s/he has with me.

SAT Writing

The student will be given strategies with which to attack each of the 5+ types of question found in the multiple choice writing section. Essay writing will be covered and practice essays critiqued. For all SAT help, the student must be prepared to take practice tests or portions thereof between sessions with me and, for writing, prepare essays. Questions missed will be explored and the reasoning behind correct answers explained. The student needs to have a previously unmarked copy of "The Official Sat Study Guide 3rd Edition” containing 10 practice tests, bringing it to each session s/he has with me.
