Hello, my name is Igor and I've been a tutor and instructor for almost twenty years. Starting in my native Russia, while I attended the Institute of High Education, I was recruited to help the students who fell behind. In USA I was a tutor to school children and adults, including those with special needs. I have a teaching background in both general and special education, in school and in college. I taught Russian at Green River Community College.
In college years my educational interests were diverse and were fulfilled in two countries - Russia and USA. In Russia I attended Moscow Institute of Chemical Engineering where I received an exceptional training in Math and Science. Subsequently, I transferred my credits to California State University - Northridge, where I took up an interest in linguistics and got my BA from the Department of Philosophy. In addition, I took some graduate courses at the Department of Education.
Currently, I'm a tutor for the Puyallup School District (I'll continue after the Summer Break). Also I tutor privately Math, Science, and Language Arts. My bilingual skills (Russian/English) have allowed me to find employment as a certified interpreter for the Department of Health and Social Services.
I'm a husband and father of two girls ages 8 and 22 months.
My hobbies include chess, reading books, and learning about the history of Washington State.
My approach to tutoring is based on identifying the student's natural strengths and areas that need to be worked on. First I assess how far behind the student fell. Then, as we progress in our learning, I identify the student's preferred made of learning (auditory, visual, etc.) and based on that information, I help the student grasp the knowledge of subject-matter. The tutorial starts with me giving the student a problem or two to solve. Then (if he/she has a problem) I do the explanation of the material and provide an ample amount of examples. Then I ask the student to try to solve the problem by him/herself. As the difficulty rises, I help along the way. I give homework, which I check next time we meet.
I'm a native speaker of Russian. I had been educated both in Russia and USA. I was an instructor of Russian at Green River Community College, and will teach it again starting in January. I have been teaching Russian to my children. I'm a certified interpreter Russia/English, and interpreting is what I do for a living.
