ABOUT ME:

Hi! My name is Kirsty and I have been tutoring professionally for six years. I specialize in math and study skills, particularly for middle and high school students, as well as SAT/ACT preparation.

I currently teach GED and ESL classes spanning math, reading, and writing at a non-profit in Tacoma. In my perfect world, it would be math, math, math! I particularly enjoy working with middle and high school aged students in study skills and mathematics. I do my best to explain math in day to day terms so even a struggling learner can understand and apply these skills to real life. I live for the "aha" moment when a student finally understands a concept.

I hold a Master's in Education with a major in higher education and a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in French from the University of North Texas. I have a breadth of experience spanning different companies and scenarios, from private in-home tutoring to working for a university learning center. My students have ranged from 4th grade through college/adult in subjects ranging from history, government, French, science, language arts, and math. I have worked with students with ADD/ADHD and other LDs.

I started tutoring in college as a peer instructor for the university's learning center. I assisted with a college algebra class that had a low passing rate. I attended class as a model student then led extra review and study sessions outside of class. From there I became a private and small group tutor for the university's athletics department where I worked exclusively with student athletes in college-level math, history, government, and English. In this position I also tutored students privately in study skills, with a focus on preparing freshman for college level coursework and organization.

In addition, I worked for a private, in-home tutoring company assisting a variety of clients with study skills, middle and high school level math, reading, French, language arts, and test preparation. I have prepared students to take the ACCUPLACER COMPASS, GED and SAT exams.

SPECIALIZATIONS:

Math - elementary, middle school, pre-algebra, algebra I and II, college algebra, geometry, SAT/ACT prep. I do not tutor statistics or calculus.

Test preparation - GED, SAT, ACT, ACCUPLACER, COMPASS

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored middle school, high school, and adult students in algebra I topics including basic algebraic expressions, algebraic formulas, solving algebraic equations, inequalities, graphing lines (slope, y-intercept, x-intercept), and word problems. I currently tutor middle school students in Algebra I as well as teach adult GED math classes that cover Algebra I subject matter.

Algebra 2

I have tutored high school algebra 2 and college algebra extensively in the last five years. I can work with students to refresh basic algebra skills and build on these for a solid foundation in algebra 2 from conic sections to synthetic division of polynomials and much more!

American History

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in History with a focus on American History. Courses include a survey of American history, great American leaders, American diplomatic history, history of science and technology, and American aviation history.

I have tutored middle and high school age students in American history as well as college age students in their survey (basic) American history courses.

GED

I currently teach GED classes (reading, writing, math, and science) for a local non-profit. This work includes helping students to pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses, familiarizing themselves with the GED battery of tests, and focusing on specific skill sets needed to pass the exam.

Geometry

I have tutored students extensively in high school geometry over the past 5 years. In addition I currently teach GED math classes which include a geometry component.

Prealgebra

I thoroughly enjoy working with middle school students studying pre algebra. I know firsthand the importance of having a strong algebra foundation and number sense in order to succeed in high school math. My focus is on ensuring that each skill set is solid and students can apply concepts to other problems, including word problems. Who said pre algebra can't be fun?

SAT Math

SAT Math tutoring focuses on the math content (algebra I, algebra II, and geometry) as well as problem solving skills and specific SAT test taking strategies. The focus is on familiarizing the student with the test format, gaining confidence, and feeling comfortable in a testing environment.

Study Skills

I have tutored students (from middle school to college) one-on-one in study skills including note-taking, outlining, reading comprehension and strategies, test preparation, decreasing anxiety, paper-writing, learning styles, study environment, time management, listening, research, and stress management.

I worked for nine months for a tutoring company tutoring private clients in home on a contract basis. I tutored multiple students (middle and high school) in study skills and test preparation and worked for 2 years for a university tutoring center. Completed tutor training with the university. I worked one-on-one mentoring students (minimum of four months with the same student) in collegiate study skills and transitioning to university academics. I also developed tutor training manual and trained tutors in study skills techniques.

World History

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of North Texas. I have studied European history (with a focus on classical and medieval time periods) at the university level. In addition, I am of European descent and spent my early years in the European school system learning European history first hand!
