Hi there! My name is Savannah. I am a recent graduate from Washington State University with a bachelors degree in English Education. I have been working with youths for several years. I have experience as a 4-H leader, a youth horseback riding instructor, a Girl Scout troop leader and a volunteer at a local childcare center. I often work with other students of my own age and younger to assist as a tutor in subjects including writing, reading, literacy and grammar. As an educator, I hope to continue to inspire and encourage our next generation or learners!

My approaches to teaching are unique and exciting--I highly value the use of kinesthetic learning (hands-on approach). I encourage students to explore and have a say in how or what they choose to learn. Learning should be a fun activity. Not a bore! I like to take challenges students face and reconstruct the issues to some sort of learning experience; every obstacle has a lesson.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have been tutoring a student living with dyslexia for six years. I began when he was diagnosed with dyslexia(fourth grade). Our tutoring sessions still occur on a regular basis. A fundamental skill we are improving is how to work through the disability rather than allow it to control his life. We have also worked on reading skills and how to sound out confusing/difficult words phonetically.

English

I am currently an English education major at Washington State University. I have completed the English portion of my Bachelor's degree. I now have just two semesters left to complete the last of my education certification requirements. I also completed my Associate's degree with an emphasis in English during high school through the Running Start program. I have assisted students of my own age group and younger with writing assignments to teach unique ways of approaching grammar and writing styles.

Literature

I am currently an English education major at Washington State University. I have completed the English portion of my bachelor's degree. I now have just two semesters left to complete the last of my education certification requirements. I also completed my associate's degree with an emphasis in English during high school through the Running Start program. A large portion of my English classes have been dedicated to literature and I am an avid reader both in and out of a classroom setting.

Proofreading

I am currently majoring in English education at Washington State University. Incorporated into our regular education curriculum, the English majors have additional requirements. Proofreading the work of peers is a major component of our coursework.

Reading

At Washington State University, all students are required to take a certain number of literature classes. Along with his experience,I have also experienced one-on-one reading as an assistant teacher at a childcare center. In my education program, I am required to understand and effectively educate students on reading and comprehension.

Sign Language

I have completed three years of American Sign Language classes and can interpret most of the language. Sentence structure is also a strength of mine. I have a vast knowledge of communicating with people who have hearing disabilities. As a student, I was a part of the American Sign Language club at the local community college where we worked toward raising awareness about the deaf community by interpreting songs, poetry and conversations. I also assisted in tutoring those students who were struggling in their Sign Language classes for about a year.
