I'm happy when I'm learning, and I'm happy when I share my learning with others. In my years of teaching 4th and 5th grades I told people my teaching success was because I liked the kids and the kids liked me. If kids like you, they will trust you as you lead them into unknown and therefore scary territory. I tell students, "We will do this together. I will be beside you until you master it and choose to fly with it." When I was in school, I was a very poor reader until I met my fifth grade teacher. He taught me to fly with reading. But I still had non-existent study skills so that I was a mediocre student through high school. I didn't go to college until my 40's; then I got all A's because I had learned to identify a task, break it down into doable parts and follow through until I had it. Part of learning is organizing so that the learner doesn't live in a world of chaotic facts difficult to access.
Not all students learn the same way. Once it is understood how a student learns (say pictures or hands on), then the student can be taught to his or her strengths. I love finding new ways to help a student understand a math concept - not just how to do it but why it works. Encouraging a reluctant reader to enjoy stories is sometimes the biggest breakthrough in wanting to learn better reading skills. I've developed insecure writers who are confident in the final product. Encouragement is one of my strengths. All children can learn.
Tutoring with WyzAnt is new for me. I have tutored various times in my life. I became a college tutor after an instructor overheard me coaching a fellow student in the student union during lunch. Having recently retired from full time teaching, my skills are fresh and up to date. Currently I volunteer in my grandchildren's classrooms, Kindergarten and fifth grade.
I would gladly agree to a first free session where the parents and student decide if we are a fit. After that we can agree on course work and scheduling.
I look forward to investing in your student's education and developing the building blocks for confident success.
In the state of Oregon I was certified to teach K-9, enclosed classroom, all subjects, until I retired in 2011 and my certification expired. On retirement I had been employed at the same school district for 10 years. My students alway achieved a rating of satisfactory or better increase in the learning on the annual state standards test. I was a highly requested teacher and always received proficient or exceptional ratings on my employee evaluations. My teaching style includes multiple approaches, encouragement and praise for effort and attitude.
