Hello students and parents,

My name is Mick, and I would like to be your Japanese tutor. In a nutshell, I have tons of experience with both teaching and learning languages and I can help you overcome any difficulties in your study if you can put in the time and effort. I make interesting and effective lessons, tailored to your interests and learning style.

My Japanese ability is very high (Japanese Language Proficiency Test, Level 1 certified) and I have 8 years experience teaching in Preschool, Kindergarten, Elementary School, Middle School, and University classes, as well as private lessons for students of all ages. I have lived in Japan for 6 years and love sharing the culture while teaching the language. I have been studying Japanese for sixteen years to reach my current level of proficiency and have personally experienced many of the difficulties that the Japanese language presents for its learners. I also have a deep understanding of language acquisition processes (double majored in Japanese and Linguistics for my B.A. and Japanese Linguistics for my M.A.).

If you are studying Japanese on your own or taking a class but need extra help, I can help you learn and come to love this difficult language. Regarding my teaching philosophy, I believe in a mixture of English-based explanations of grammar and differences of word/phrase usage in combination with Japanese-based instruction for role-play/task-completion to practice using the language in actual reading/writing and listening/speaking interactions. I also believe in tailoring lessons to match student interests. I adapt grammar explanations from various textbooks while also using authentic materials as much as possible to show you how the language is really used and to teach the language used for topics of interest to the students. I can also do Japanese Language Proficiency Test preparation lessons.

E-mail me for my teaching portfolio, student evaluations, references, or any questions you might have. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
