Alisa's Answer:

To divide two by nine, you need to use your long division skills. Unfortunately, this interface doesn't lend itself well to showing you the actual long division problem, so try to follow the steps with me.

1. draw a division symbol (should look like half a rectangle). Put the 9 in front of the rectangle and a 2 inside it. Make the top of the rectangle long.

2. 9 can't fit into 2, so it goes into 2 "zero" times. Put a zero on the top of the rectangle, directly above the 2.

3. Now, add a decimal point and a 0 behind the 2  and a decimal point and a 0 just above that on the top of the rectangle.  (should look like "2.0" and "0.0")

4. 9 goes into 20 two times, so put a 2 just above the zero in "2.0" (above the rectangle. Now, at the top of the rectangle, you should see "0.2"

5. Since 9 times 2 is 18, you need to put an 18 just below the 2.0 and subtract, like this:

   2.0

-  18

_______

      2

Now you have to put nine into 2 again. See the pattern? You would need to add another zero and then do 9 into 20 again, and so on.

This is called a repeating decimal. The answer will be 0.2222222222.... forever.

The way you write this answer is by writing 0.2 with a little horizontal line above the 2. That line means that the 2 continues forever.

I wish I could show you the actual diagram of what this looks like, but if you follow the steps, you should be able to see it.

What is 3x + -5.44=29

It's about the process of elimination in algebra but I just can't figure it out

Alisa's Answer:

3x + -5.44 = 29

First, you want to add the inverse of -5.44 to both sides of the equation.

3x=29 + 5.44

3x = 34.44

Now you want to multiply the invers of 3 (which is 1/3) to both sides of equation. 3 x 1/3=1, so that leaves you with just x on one side.

x = 34.44/3

x = 11.48

when graphing inequality equation on number line, when do you use () or []

-3 > x

(-00, -3] or [-00, -3] or what

the () and [] are confusing me.

Alisa's Answer:

you would use a parenthesis when the inequality sign is "less than" or "greater than." So for the example you gave, you would use a parenthesis. (-00, -3)  This is pronounced, "The interval from negative infinity TO negative three."

You would use a bracket when the inequality sign is "less than or equal to" or "greater than or equal to." If you had "-3 is greater than or equal to x", for example, it would look like (-00, -3]

This is pronounced, "The interval from negative infinity THROUGH -3."

The brackets show that you go all the way through the number (equal to it), not just up to the number and stop.

why do we round up or down?

THIS IS JUST A EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION FOR MY SON WHO IS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Asked by Roger from Charlotte, NC

Alisa's Answer:

We also round up or down to show a range. For instance, if I was measuring snakes and I measured them as follows:

20 inches, 15 inches, 6 inches, 25 inches, and 34 inches

I could say "The snakes I measured were about 5 inches to 35 inches long." It gives the idea (an estimation) of the general size, without having to list each specifically.

I get stuck on the part where you have to add or subtract on both sides on an equation in the first step

2/3n=4n-10/3n-1/2

do i add 10/3n to the 2/3n or do i add 4n to the 2/3n

Alisa's Answer:

You need to get all the n's to one side of the equation. You could move all the n's to the 2/3n side, so you would get:

2/3n-4n+10/3n=-1/2

Or you could do it this way (in two steps):

1. Move the -1/2 to the other side:

2/3n+1/2=4n-10/3n

2. Then move the 2/3n to the other side:

1/2=4n-10/3n-2/3n

The point is to get all the variables (the n's) on one side of the equal sign, and everything else on the other side. This is called isolating the variables.

After isolating the variables, you can then simplify.
