Hi! My name is Charles and I’m a published author who takes great joy and pride in mentoring students of any age in a number of subjects with, of course, my passion being the well-written word.
I attended a private school from kindergarten through twelfth grade and went on to major in English at Macalester College, University of Minnesota and the University of Delaware. In England I studied English History, Architecture and Creative Writing with Short Schools, Ltd.
After college I started in broadcasting, radio and TV, and then went on to work in film and video as a soundman and cameraman and later as scriptwriter. My film and video career has taken me all around the world; Canada, Mexico, England, France, Italy, Monaco, Portugal, Greece, Senegal, and Mauritania, and allowed me to work with some of the most exciting and creative people on the planet. I have studied with Judith Guest (“Ordinary People”), Rebecca Hill (“A Killing Time in St. Cloud”), Gary Braver (“Tunnel Vision”, “Skin Deep”), and screenplay construction with David S. Freeman (“Beyond Structure”).
Scriptwriting and editing and completion of my first novel (with the sequel on the way) gives me a unique advantage when working with students on reading and writing assignments, especially longer projects.
Most of all, I believe improving a student's study skills and work ethic are as important as completing assignments and think they should be an integral part of the learning process. Around the core of reading and writing I include additional skill sets including public speaking, business education, basic mathematics (algebra and geometry) and usage of Microsoft Word 2010 and Excel.
Each student is unique, and I endeavor to match my efforts to their goals with patience and humor and professionalism.
I have started four businesses, all of which were profitable for their lifetimes, and one of which I still own (20+ years). I have solid experience in start-up and organizing, fiscal control (estimating, invoicing, cash flow, accounting), advertising/marketing and managing employees. I know the importance of a business plan and have a good grasp of utilizing social media for business purposes.
After leaving broadcasting, I worked, then owned, a recording studio that mixed soundtracks for films and commercials. As my experience grew I became a location sound man and went all around the US and the world working on everything from feature films to documentaries. From sound I graduated to a film cameraman and vdeographer, eventually owning my own video production company specializing in medical and operating room videos.
The ability deliver an address or speech with confidence is a valuable skill and one that both broadcasting and live theater have helped me attain.
Upon graduating from high school I secured my first on-air announcing job at a small radio station in New Jersey. Even while taking college classes I worked part time at both radio and TV stations as an announcer or newsman, eventually moving full-time as announcer and production manger after college.
In addition, I have some on-stage theatrical experience, appearing as an actor in five plays over the years.
My film and video production experience are intertwined (see Film experience) as both mediums require an understanding of what makes a good, solid production.
I owned my own video production company for fifteen years. To stay alive and thrive in that business you must be adept at scriptwriting, shooting, lighting and especially editing. I completed scores of TV commericals, documentaries, sales presentations and spent the last eight years specializing in operating-room videos for use as training and marketing tools for pharmaceutical, drug and medical implement companies.
