My name is Tom. I am currently an instructor at Shoreline Community College teaching ESL 70, an intensive level 5 writing course preparing students for taking mainstream college classes. I have also taught ESL 90 and will teach 080 this fall.
Recently, I worked as a Content Developer for the English learning website TalkEnglish.com. Also, I'm a teacher and tutor with experience working with exchange students at Seattle University in the Science and Engineering program on their English and presentation skills. I finished my graduate internship at CISC (Chinese Information and Service Center) in downtown Seattle in March 2013.
I finished my undergraduate in 2009 with a B.A in English and a minor in Philosophy. I have extensive experience working with Chinese students and adults. I've taught in China twice: the first time for one year in 2009-10 and the second time for the summer of 2011 in a city called Zhangjiagang in Jiangsu province. Currently, I'm an intern at CISC in the Seattle Chinatown, a non-profit organization for Chinese immigrants to receive educational support and language training.
I've studied French in high school (3 years) and in college (4 quarters) and have a basic understanding of it. I also speak some Mandarin Chinese.
My areas of concentration are in writing, comprehension, vocabulary, and communication in English with TESOL students and adults. As an English major, I've studied persuasive writing, essay formats, argumentative writing, fiction and academic prose. In addition, I can teach first year college French or high school first and second year.
I consider myself caring, creative and willing to experiment with individual learning styles and needs. Hopefully, we can work together to achieve your goals.
I have recently completed the Algebra 1 qualification for WyzAnt.
I've lived in China for one year in 2009. I spent the 2011 summer in China also. I've audited Chinese 115 and 125 at Seattle University, and I currently intern at the Chinese Information and Service Center in Chinatown near downtown Seattle.
I feel that my experiences working in China, auditing Chinese courses, and working with Chinese adults in Seattle has provided a solid foundation for teaching beginner Chinese.

I have been practicing yoga for about a year now. During that time, I started my own yoga group at a church. We use the work of John Kabat Zinn in our sessions and mindfulness meditation.
