I find tutoring a fun and satisfying experience. I've got 40+ hours helping students in elementary, middle, and high school learn reading, writing, and English through the King County Library System's Study Zone program. It's fascinating to see how different people think and I enjoy figuring out how to help each individual learn according to their own personal strengths. I do this, of course, while keeping the environment casual and fun.
My college degree is in Japanese language from The Evergreen State College. In my final year, I did a foreign exchange to Kobe and learned all about a foreign culture, first hand! I'm considering taking an intensive CELTA certification course later this year, which would highly qualify me to teach ESL to students of all levels.
I also bring business and professional writing experience to the table. I worked as a manager for a major corporation, but I'm much more suited to helping people learn and achieve their goals. I still work as a freelance copywriter, which might not mean what you think. It has nothing to do with copyright law. Copywriting is a specific style of persuasive writing for advertising and marketing. It's not what you typically learn in high school or college English classes, but it's useful nonetheless.
Since I'm not working a standard 9-5 job, my schedule is flexible. I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, just to keep things fair for everybody. I'm dedicated to punctuality and will respect your time as well. I typically like to meet students at the library for sessions. I'm based out of Mercer Island, but if that simply doesn't work, we can probably figure something out.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or if you'd like to set up a time to meet!
