Hi! My name is Adriana, and I am a native Spanish speaker. I recently moved with my family to Seattle from tropical Costa Rica. I have a Master's degree in Botany, and two children. Back in Costa Rica, I worked as an Environmental Educator while my husband did research in the tropical forest, now he is at the UW and I enjoy my time teaching Spanish!
In the last couple of years I have been teaching Spanish in a one-to-one setting, in a more informal, comfortable, fun and positive way. I specially like motivating students to:
- carry a fluent conversation in Spanish and feel good about being able to do it
- learn more about cultural differences in Spanish-speaking countries and maybe visiting or studying abroad to practice their Spanish skills
- be able to address different/interesting subjects such as the environment, history, technology, health, etc. depending on the age and interest of the student
- keep the love of learning a new language alive!
I have also accumulated experience in the area of medical translations. During recent years there has been a growing need for understanding Hispanic patients in hospitals and clinics in the US, a situation that has been addressed by hiring medical interpreters, but sometimes these professionals may not be readily available at all times, therefore I can help healthcare professionals learn the basics of medical Spanish and be able to understand and treat their Spanish-speaking patients. My daughter has been in a Spanish Immersion program since Kindergarten. She is now in 6th grade and has far surpassed my abilities to support her in her Spanish studies. About two months ago Adriana started tutoring her once a week and her help has been invaluable. We started seeing improvement in trouble areas after just 2 sessions. My daughter is very enthusiastic about working with Adriana and I can tell she is happy to have someone to turn to for help with her Spanish. Adriana is very kind, patient, flexible and effective in her tutoring. We really enjoy her and feel very fortunate to have connected with her.
Adriana is very patient with my seven grader and she reviews grammar and vocabulary with him repeatedly until he completely masters the skills. Thanks!
My Mom has been taking Spanish lessons from Adriana now for almost six months. she is patient, knowledgeable, and her lesson plans are organized. It has made a world of difference.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a native Spanish speaker, who grew up in Costa Rica and went to a bilingual school there. Once I graduated from the University of Costa Rica I enrolled in graduate programs in the US, graduating with a Master's degree from the U of Georgia. I have lived in both countries for a number of years and understand the growing need to become proficient in the use of several languages to increase global and cultural intelligence in the population. Communication across cultures is necessary to achieve success. I will like to contribute my knowledge and live experience in a Latin american country.
