I'm an experienced English and ESL tutor. I have a Bachelor's degree in English, along with a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL). I then went on to continue my education and received my Master's in TESOL. Along with my educational experience, I have also had a significant amount of experience working in various settings and with a wide range of ages. I have worked a teacher's aide in an elementary school, a tutor in a middle school, and for a few years as a writing tutor and an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher's aide at Central Washington University.

My expertise is primarily with ESL students. I have learned how to help second-language English speakers to address any language-specific errors that they might face. I have experience in the issues facing ESL instruction specifically, and education in general. I have worked with students from age 5 all the way through adult students, and so I have an understanding of how to adapt my instruction to different age groups. In my tutoring, I am a fan of using the Socratic method: asking questions that help students to find answers on their own. However, I also have a knowledge of when and how to provide my students with information that will be helpful to them. I believe that students of all ages learn the most effectively when they are given strategies that they can apply to multiple areas of study.

If you are an ESL student at any level of English language proficiency, or if you are a parent seeking an English, language arts, or social studies tutor for your K-12 student, I believe that I am the person you are looking for. I can help you and/or your child set reasonable goals to become more proficient in English, or to increase general writing and reading proficiency. You can expect that through my tutoring, you (or your child) will experience a noteworthy amount of growth in English proficiency. English proficiency will lead in turn to success in higher levels of education or in a career.

Sarah’s subjects

Bible Studies

I have taken Bible classes during my time at Northwest University. I took classes on both Old and New Testament History and Literature, as well as Biblical Interpretation. Along with this, I have personally studied the Bible.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked in an elementary school for the past year as a paraeducator. I helped to implement approved curriculum and also led reading groups for students.

English

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English. For my degree I took individual classes in literature, writing, and grammar. I have also worked as a writing tutor and a proofreader/editor, with a few years of experience. My Master's degree is in TESOL, and for this degree I had even more training in grammar and linguistics.

ESL/ESOL

I earned a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate along with my Bachelor's degree in English. I have also just earned my Master's degree in TESOL. Along with my education, I have volunteered and worked as an ESL writing and reading tutor. A few years ago, I also worked as an instructional assistant in an ESL class. I therefore have the education and qualifications to be a good ESL tutor.

For my Bachelor's degree, I took a class called Structure of English, as well as a class entitled Grammar for ESOL. For my Master's degree, I took Pedagogical Grammar classes and Linguistics classes. Each of these classes has increased my understanding of English grammar. I have also worked as a writing tutor, during which time I gained experience in English grammar.
