Chinese

I am a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and I once worked as a reporter for Radio Free Asia in Washington, D.C., going on air. I also practice Chinese calligraphy and have published essays in Chinese in newspapers and magazines.

I am certified to teach both English and Chinese in Washington State, and I once interned at Bellevue School District, teaching 7th and 8th grade students Chinese and also Language Arts. My teaching style is warm and demanding with a lot of care for the students. I can help with students with homework, improve their spoken and written Chinese as well as prepare them for tests.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught English to Chinese students for more than 10 years. Before I settled down in Seattle, I worked as an English teacher at a private college in China for about two years. I am familiar with the teaching methods of ESL and I once took a summer course at UW about teaching ESL and made a lot of demo lessons.

During my teaching experience, I got acquaintanced with English learners from different backgrounds. I can understand the problems they might encounter and find solutions for them. I am especially good at teaching them the academic language in writing, since I once studied at the School of Journalism at UC Berkeley.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
