I went to Cornell University for a B.S. and Master's in Electrical and Computer Engineering and to UCSD for a PhD in Computer Science (Distributed Systems, Networking). I've tutored in various subjects for years, including test-based tutoring (such as the SAT or GRE or the algebra II final that some school districts require for graduation) as well as general tutoring - help through the course of a year or semester in Algebra, Calculus, Geometry, etc. I have also worked extensively with students on the local colleges' Computer Science courses, programming (Java, C, Visual Basic, Assembly) and theory (Complexity, Algorithms, etc). I've worked with students of all ages, from teaching a child how to program a computer to working with local high school students on math courses and SATs to helping students from all of the local colleges on their math and computer science curricula.

I do all of my tutoring out of local cafes and coffee shops on weekends in Kirkland, Washington.

I look forward to speaking with you more about your learning and studying needs!

I'll help you maximize your time, and organize your work on the test so that you're concentrating on the questions that are likely to give you the most points.

Algebra 1

Algebra can be hard, especially when first encountered. It's very important to build a good foundation in Algebra I and Pre-Algebra, since Algebra 2 just continues with the same topics, with harder problems! I have years of experience teaching this subject in many of the nearby schools and to students of varying ages. I can help you get through these tough classes and maybe even make math more interesting for you!

C

I have a PhD in Computer Science and C is one of the main programing languages that I use. I have years of experience coding in C for school assignments, both developing applications for computer and for embedded devices. I've also written C code for Palm Pilots. I worked for Microsoft for one year, coding in C/C++. I have several years experience of tutoring high school and college age students in C/C++, and even one middle school student.

C#

My primary coding languages are C and C++ but during my time at Microsoft Research in 2006 and 2007 I switched temporarily to C#, and I was very happy to rediscover the language. My favorite thing about C# is that it combines the coding style and power of C/C++ with the quick GUI (graphical user interface) development of other languages like VB. I'd be happy to help you get started working in C#, or to help with existing projects or classes.

C++

C++ is the primary language that I use. I have years of experience coding in C++ as a part of my coursework and I worked for Microsoft for one year, coding in C++. I have several years experience of tutoring high school and college age students in C++, and even one middle school student.

Calculus

Calculus is one of those subjects that seems to be required of everyone, whether for college courses or as AP classes in high school. I can help you ace your college course, no matter which level of calculus, or help you work towards a 5 on your AP Calc AB, BC or D test!

Computer Engineering

I have a bachelors degree as well as a masters degree in Computer Engineering from Cornell University and have experience as a teaching assistant in the subject as well as tutoring individual students. I was a teaching assistant for a microcontroller course as well as a C.E. lab course on circuits, where I instructed weekly labs, graded projects, etc.

I have 10 years of experience in the fields of computer engineering and computer science, as well as 5+ years of experience tutoring students in related subjects. I've taught C, C++, Java, Visual Basic, and many other languages to students of various ages, from 12 to adult.

Computer Science

My PhD is in Computer Science. I have 10 years of experience in the fields of computer engineering and computer science, as well as 5+ years of experience tutoring students in related subjects. I've taught C, C++, Java, Visual Basic, and many other languages to students of various ages, from 12 to adult. I've also taught the related math and computer science logic courses that many colleges include in their computer science majors, including discrete math, logic, complexity, algorithms, etc.

Differential Equations

Differential equations can be tough. It's like calculus but also different and sometimes that gets students into trouble. Luckily it's all about recognizing patterns and fortunately, that's what the human brain was built to do! I can help you work through these tough problems, and to see that once you get through the earlier pieces of the course, it gets easier from there on out! I aced this class in college (at Cornell) and have taught it since, to SDSU students that needed some help getting through it, so the material is fresh in my head.

Discrete Math

I have taken several discrete math courses, and studied the topic extensively in college, doing well in all related classes. I have retained the textbooks from these courses and am able to work with students effectively in this subject.

Ear Training

I have 20 years of piano and music theory experience, as well as 5 years of several other instruments. I have spent 7 years directing and participating in a cappella singing groups, where I write most of our music and I've taken a college course in music theory as well as several independent courses. Within my job as musical director of an a cappella group, I have taught several students about ear training and how to read music.

Electrical Engineering

My bachelors and masters degrees from Cornell are both in Electrical and Computer Engineering and I can tutor students in most Electrical Engineering courses, from digital circuits to computer architecture to semiconductors to embedded systems. Please feel free to contact me and let me know which class you are working on and I'll be happy to help you.

English

I'm a stickler for grammar and proper use of English. If you need help finessing your writing, or editing a thesis, or proofreading, I'm happy to help. I quickly find and fix errors and awkward wordings and help you polish your writing. Depending on your needs, I can read over your work and help you fix it by simply sending corrections, by sending corrections with explanations, or by working with you to change it little by little.

GED

One of my specialties is test prep, including not only the content of the test, but the tricks and ins and outs of each standardized test, section by section. I'll help you maximize your time, and organize your work on the test so that you're concentrating on the questions that are likely to give you the most points.

General Music

I have 20 years of piano and music theory experience, as well as 15 years of flute, 10 of trombone, 2 of ukulele, and 15 of voice. I have spent 7 years directing and participating in a cappella singing groups, where I write most of our music and I've taken a college course in music theory as well as several independent courses.

Geometry

Geometry has a lot of memorization early on that forms the basis of the rest of the class. It's also all on the SAT! If you are just starting, let me help you build a strong base for the remainder of your class. Of if you're partway through and struggling, let me help you get caught up and back on track!

Grammar

I'm a stickler for grammar and proper use of English. If you need help finessing your writing, or editing a thesis, or proofreading, I'm happy to help. I quickly find and fix errors and awkward wordings and help you polish your writing. Depending on your needs, I can read over your work and help you fix it by simply sending corrections, by sending corrections with explanations, or by working with you to change it little by little.

GRE

I scored perfectly on the analytical and math section of the GRE, and understand very clearly the adaptive, computer-based format of the test. I can help students to understand how to leverage the format of the test, how to effectively study for each section, and how to improve the skills necessary for each type of problem.

HTML

I have written several webpages in pure html, with and without the addition of scripting languages such as asp, javascript, php, etc. I have written database web pages, and I can develop web pages using tools such as DreamWeaver and Frontpage as well as with a simple text editor.

Java

Java is one of the most commonly used programming languages, especially for classes. Whether you're working on AP computer science in high school or on an intro class in college or even a data structures or programming languages class in college, I can help you design, approach, code, debug and test your Java program and better yet, get you ready to do it without help the next time!

Linear Algebra

This can be a tough course for even the best math students since it's so different than the calculus courses that usually precede it in a college curriculum. I aced this class in college and it's a requirement for many computer science students (especially if you're interested in graphics!) so it's something I still need to keep current and use. I can help you work through these topics, whether it is for a class or for a prereq for something like computer science or towards a math degree. The key is that you have to memorize so many theorems. What I will help you with is figuring out strategies to remember and these, and determining which are most important and require memorization.

Linux

My primary platform is Linux and I would be happy to help you obtain/install/learn how to use any of the various distributions of Linux. I've helped students in the past in learning how to manage their own Unix machines, and also have helped students who must log into and use Linux/BSD/etc. machines as a means for accessing machines for their coursework, etc.

Logic

I am in the Computer Science field, wherein logic and discrete math are foundations for my work. I have tutored several students in these fields and find that often, students simply need a bit of extra help learning the basic principles at the start of a class, or that they need something explained to them in a different way than what they have previously heard. I am qualified to teach logic principles found in high school and university course levels, up to and including some graduate material.

LSAT

I took the LSAT several years ago and received an excellent score. I specialize in teaching how to master the analytical section, a common difficulty for pre-law students. I also am able to effectively teach problem-solving skills as well as practice/study skills for all other sections.

Macintosh

I manage and work with several computers, of varying types and operating systems, but my primary machine is a Mac. I love the combination of user interface and terminal access for the computer minded person, and also the fact that they can be incredibly simple to use for a new computer user. I can help you get your Mac setup, learn how to use new software, cleanup old applications, etc. I've helped a number of students get setup on a Mac, from a computer science college student looking to use a Mac in place of Windows so that he could write programs more easily to a woman in her 80's starting with her first computer!

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is a powerful tool for those who work in or study Business, Statistics, lots of subjects. I can help you use Excel to model your data in just the way you need. I can also help with simpler issues like setup and install if that is what you'd like.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook for 15 years and am familiar with the "ins and outs" of various versions. I would be happy to help you set up your account(s), or rules to filter mail into folders, or any other task that you'd need. If you'd simply like some help learning the ropes of how to use outlook, or a tutorial on how to use new features, I'd be happy to help with that as well.

Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a great tool for presenting your work! You can make an animated slide show for a school project, or for a new business idea, the possibilities are endless. Let me know what you're hoping to communicate and together we can build a presentation that will wow your audience.

Microsoft Windows

I run and manage 10+ Windows computers, including my personal machine as well as those of friends and family. I am able to help with any tasks you might need: installation, formatting, virus removal and cleanup, spyware detection and cleanup, application installation, remote access/remote desktop setup, website hosting, ftp, application development, etc. After years of working with windows-based computers owned by very different types of people, I've seen and fixed almost all of the common problems and would be happy to help you solve yours.

Microsoft Word

Whether you just want to install and start using Word, or you want to learn how to make and print birthday cards, or you want to do something more complicated, I'm happy to help. I can teach you how to set up and format any kind of document that you like, and teach you how to find and use all sorts of interesting features of this word processing application.

Music Theory

I have 20 years of piano and music theory experience, as well as 5 years of several other instruments. I have spent 7 years directing and participating in a cappella singing groups, where I write most of our music and I've taken a college course in music theory as well as several independent courses.

As Computer Science PhD, I have spent a good deal of time on network programming, for both Windows and Unix environments. I can explain networking concepts both in the context of a networking class with textbook and assignments, and in the context of setting up a home network and computer system.

Piano

I have 20 years of piano and music theory experience, as well as 2-15 years of several other instruments, including flute, trombone, ukulele, and voice. I am qualified to teach students to read music, and to give introductory piano lessons, through the first few years of study.

Prealgebra

Algebra can be hard, especially when first encountered. It's very important to build a good foundation in Algebra I and Pre-Algebra, since Algebra 2 just continues with the same topics, with harder problems! I have years of experience teaching this subject in many of the nearby schools and to students of varying ages. I can help you get through these tough classes and maybe even make math more interesting for you!

Precalculus

Pee-calculus can be hard for students because it's often just a collection of unrelated concepts that didn't fit into algebra but need to be learned before calculus. Sometimes it includes some trigonometry and sometimes not. Some schools call a similar course "math analysis." I can help you try to relate some of these seemingly unrelated concepts together, and I can also help you to see how they all relate either back to Algebra or how they lead to something you might use in Calculus (or even later in life!).

Probability

Probability is a subject many students find difficult, and it is included in a large number of courses and tests, from high school math classes to the SAT/PSAT to college courses. My background is in Computer Science, wherein one of the foundations is this type of math. Additionally, my undergraduate degree is in Electrical and Computer Engineering, wherein one of my focuses was Probability/Stochastic Processes/Information Theory. I can help you with probability-based classes, whether in high school or college, and also with test preparation for standardized tests such as the SAT, PSAT, LSAT, GRE, etc.

Proofreading

I'm a stickler for grammar and proper use of English. If you need help finessing your writing, or editing a thesis, or proofreading, I'm happy to help. I quickly find and fix errors and awkward wordings and help you polish your writing. Depending on your needs, I can read over your work and help you fix it by simply sending corrections, by sending corrections with explanations, or by working with you to change it little by little.

PSAT

I have 10+ years of experience working with students on preparation for various standardized tests, such as the SAT, PSAT, LSAT, and GRE. I can help with content (math, reading, vocabulary, grammar, etc) and also teach the study skills and tips and tricks that are extremely valuable for this sort of test. With students, I walk through tricks such as how to approach each question, how to recognize the various categories of questions within each section, how to manage time, etc. The PSAT is an important test for many students and is often the most difficult, as it is taken earlier in their academic careers than the SAT and so many students find themselves less prepared than for the SAT. I am happy to help your student master the material on the test and to help them become comfortable practicing and studying for this important test.

SAT Math

One of my specialties is test prep, including not only the content of the test, but the tricks and ins and outs of each standardized test, section by section. I'll help you maximize your time, and organize your work on the test so that you're concentrating on the questions that are likely to give you the most points.

SAT Reading

One of my specialties is test prep, including not only the content of the test, but the tricks and ins and outs of each standardized test, section by section. I'll help you maximize your time, and organize your work on the test so that you're concentrating on the questions that are likely to give you the most points.

SAT Writing

One of my specialties is test prep, including not only the content of the test, but the tricks and ins and outs of each standardized test, section by section. I'll help you maximize your time, and organize your work on the test so that you're concentrating on the questions that are likely to give you the most points.

Sight Singing

I have 20 years of piano and music theory experience, as well as 5 years of several other instruments. I have spent 7 years directing and participating in a cappella singing groups, where I write most of our music and I've taken a college course in music theory as well as several independent courses. This explains my background in music.
With specific regards to sight-singing, I direct currently a group of 18 people, and my purpose there is to lead them in sight-singing songs that I have arranged (written) so that they can be performed for paying audiences. I have taught sight-singing to a number of members of such groups, current and past.

SQL

SQL queries form the basis for much of database programming. I can help you write programs in any language that use SQl statements to work with a database, be that database in MS Access, Oracle, DB2, anything. We can also just work with general SQL functionality in databases, like stored procedures and basic queries. Or, if you came to this topic looking for help putting together a webpage with a database backend, we can work on that too.

SSAT

One of my specialties is test prep, including not only the content of the test, but the tricks and ins and outs of each standardized test, section by section. I'll help you maximize your time, and organize your work on the test so that you're concentrating on the questions that are likely to give you the most points.

Statistics

Statistics is a great math choice if you might go into business or even several types of engineering. It's also a portion of the Math SAT tests. I am happy to help you through your statistics class in high school or college, or to work with you on the statistics content of any of the standardized tests. I have a good deal of interest in the subject and experience, as I spent some time in college specializing in information theory, which is based on upper level probability and statistics concepts.

Study Skills

I rely on good study skills in order to perform well on standardized tests, in college and high school, and even in day-to-day work. I an effectively teach how to manage one's time from day to day, and how to effectively do homework and study for tests. I can also teach tips and tools for studying for standardized tests, such as the LSAT, SAT, GRE. etc. I can also teach test-taking tools, in addition to study tools, for students who have trouble with standardized tests.

Trigonometry

Like geometry, trigonometry has a lot of memorization in the beginning and falling behind can be tough as the course progresses. Let me help you get up to speed (or catch back up to speed if need be) and get you ready to move on to Calculus!

UNIX

I work every day with several distributions of Linux and would be happy to help you get set up with whatever "flavor" you would like. We can get your new computer running Linux, set up your web server, learn how to find and install programs, convert your existing Windows machine to Linux, debug problems, whatever you like. Just let me know what your goal is and I'm here to help!

Visual Basic

I spent several years as a Software Design Engineer for a company, during which time I programmed almost exclusively in Visual Basic. I built full scale applications both for internal use by the company and also for sale by the company. I find that visual basic is an excellent language for students to begin to learn computer programming, as it allows students to write programs that have complicated graphic interfaces without much background in user interface development. I have worked with several students learning Visual Basic and would be happy to help you learn how to use this language.

Vocabulary

I see this subject come up over and over with standardized tests. We can use a more fun and interesting way to learn the SAT (PSAT/LSAT, etc) vocabulary that actually helps you retain words rather than just staring at flashcards day in and day out.

Web Design

I've designed webpages for numerous people, including personal sites as well as business sites. Whether you're looking to learn about web design for a class, or to design a page for your new business, or just curious about how webpages work, I'm here to help. I can also design a page for you if you'd prefer that to creating your own. I can show you how to set up a page that looks and works the way you want it to. Also, while web design just teaches you how to write a page, I can take you a step further and show you the ins and outs of how to get a domain name, find hosting for your page (or how to host your own) and everything needed to go from nothing to having a webpage out there for everyone to check out!

Writing

I'm a stickler for grammar and proper use of English. If you need help finessing your writing, or editing a thesis, or proofreading, I'm happy to help. I quickly find and fix errors and awkward wordings and help you polish your writing. Depending on your needs, I can read over your work and help you fix it by simply sending corrections, by sending corrections with explanations, or by working with you to change it little by little.
