I am a college graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre and a minor in Biology. As such I am proficient in a wide variety of academic subjects.
In the scientific area of academics, I have a solid knowledge base in math, particularly in algebra and precalculus, and I have tutored in these subjects. My tutoring style in math is not entirely based on repetitive problem solving, although that is helpful. Instead I focus on conceptual understanding and the ability to connect concepts into a total understanding of the subject.
My biology studies focused primarily on anatomy and physiology, but no discussion of human biology is complete without and understanding of all living things. So I have also taken courses in botany and chemistry. I have experience tutoring in this area at a high school level. In my approach to the biological sciences, I focus largely on the terminology used in the subject. Learning terms and their definitions is a critical step in understanding biology. Not only are many classes centered around definitions, but by knowing what things are called and why they are so named, a student often immediately understands the overall concept. Beyond terminology, I focus on how key processes build upon one another to facilitate life.
In the world of theatre I have studied acting, singing, playwriting, stagecraft, costuming, stage management, and directing as well as the history and styles of the dramatic arts. I have had roles in many productions, both musical (such as Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music" ) and non-musical (John Patrick's "Teahouse of the August Moon"), and I also directed the play WASP by Steve Martin. My approach to acting is method based (notable examples of method actors include Marlon Brando and Daniel Day-Lewis), and I use it because it is based on the idea that anyone who is dedicated and works hard can develop a process that leads to great performances. I use various theatre games and warm ups, and I strongly emphasize scene by scene analysis.
I consider voice lessons to be an extension of acting lessons, and I primarily focus on musical theatre. My approach to teaching voice revolves around getting the student to convey the emotional content and the dramatic meaning of the song. During that process I help students work out issues with technique (muscle tension, breath control, etc.), and I approach such issues as hurdles to reaching the best performance rather than problems with their voices. I want the song to come alive, and a free and natural sound facilitates this.
Lastly, my college education stressed written composition as one of the most fundamental skills in the academic arena. I learned this to be true. A profound composition can achieve so much. I worked in the writing center at my university, and there we helped students edit for content, using the details of a subject to back up a clear and persuasive argument. Engaging the reader is key to selling the argument.
I want to thank you for considering me as your tutor, and I sincerely hope I will be able to assist you in your educational journey.
I am a college graduate with a minor in Biology. As such I have taken numerous math and science classes such as algebra, geometry, chemistry, precalculus, physics, anatomy, and calculus. I have previous experience tutoring math up to the precalculus level.
I minored in biology with an emphasis on human healthcare. I have studied general biology, botany, vertebrate anatomy, and physiology, biology of drugs, organic chemistry, and genetics. I have experience tutoring biology to fulfill science requirements for graduation.
I have an extensive background in theatre, primarily in acting, singing, and directing, but I also have experience in stage management, stagecraft, costuming, lighting, and prop design. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts from Saint Martin's University where I had lead or principle roles in seven major productions. In addition to my college experience, I have had roles or assisted in the production of over a dozen community and high school productions. When directing or coaching actors I use a method approach with heavy emphasis on scene analysis and movement. I may also use the demonstrative methods developed by Brecht or a more classical style as a means of building character from the outside if the scene or play lends itself to such an approach.
