I found my science calling in 10th grade. I was inspired by "hands on learning" and when I went to graduate school that was my focus. I have always been fascinated by the biological and ecological sciences wanting to investigate "how life works." As a working biology researcher, writer and a high school and college biology teacher I found that devoting time to student’s interests allowed students to be more successful in their classes. Providing students with a clear understanding of how systems work provides them with the technical skills to understand biological concepts. Biology is like following a road map. Once you find the right road the learning adventure begins.
Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I have worked in three different zoo's taking care of many different exotic species. Animal husbandry is not the only job in a zoo, teaching people about how, why and where animals live is also important. Having that experience allowed me to enter the teaching profession and bring that passion to the classroom. One of my favorite comments from students is when they say “Wow, I got it.” This clear understanding of a biological concept is a first step on classroom success.
The focus of this course of study will focus on the origins, structures, functions reproduction, growth, development, interactions and behaviors of living things. Content will focus around major biological concepts which include: analytical skills and interdisciplinary approaches to discovery. The major biological concepts explored include the classification of organisms, cell structure and function, the change and diversification of organisms, ecosystems and their interactions, and the influence of humankind on ecosystems. Applications of concepts to society, individuals, and technology are included.
The focus of ecology examines the environment and man’s impact on it. The students will develop an understanding of what an ecosystem is and the elements that determine the types and numbers of organisms that live there. Topics that will be focused on are atmosphere (air), the hydrosphere (water) and the lithosphere (soil) and how they sustain the biosphere (life), and how the biosphere interactions with each of the other spheres. We will also look at the role humans have had in changing each of these spheres and the impact these changes have had on the world. We will consider the possible solutions and potential obstacles to the implementation of solutions.
