My name is James. I have been an instructor, teacher and facilitator in a number of private and non-profit organizations for over 17 years. I have worked with individuals, small groups and large audiences. I have extensive experience helping people learn new skills and achieve their personal goals. Most recently, I have turned my attention to teaching ESL and English. I've been volunteering as an instructor at Shoreline Community College and am currently working with a Level 7 (college prep) ESL/English class for international students. I truly enjoy helping intermediate and advanced students and adults improve their English skills.
I believe that all languages are acquired through actively engaging in authentic and meaningful activities such as lively conversation combined with review and mastery of the fundamentals such as grammar, reading and writing. As a tutor I think it's crucial to determine your needs, goals, desires and expectations for learning English. In essence, my goal as your tutor is to discover what you want to achieve and then provide you with enjoyable and practical instruction to achieve your goal.
On a personal note: I have always had a passion for languages, cultural studies, literature and travel. I have a Bachelor's degree in Classics from the University of Utah. I recently earned a Post Baccalaureate certificate in ESL from S-TESL/Seattle University. I am currently learning Italian. I have studied Latin, Greek, German and I even tried my hand at a little Japanese.
