Math is so important to success, not only in school but for home and career so take the time now to master it! I am passionate about helping students establish this critical foundation not just for their GPA but for life - to make math their ally. I've been helping others with schoolwork since I was in elementary school continuing through college. Because my goal is to help students learn how to learn, some students are able to take off on their own after only one or two sessions!
My interest in math lead me to an Electrical Engineering degree, cum laude, from the University of Washington and I worked as a quality and test engineer for the Fluke Corporation and Medtronics. This work experience along with using math for many outside interests really cemented the usefulness of math.
Since having children, I have taught math, drafting, and technical design along with other subjects for Renton Christian School's Junior High in addition to tutoring.
Trouble with math stems from solvable reasons - not because someone isn't "good at math." During tutoring, I use hands-on items, kinesthetics, and visuals at all levels so the student has the opportunity of experience math instead of just working with abstract numbers.
Because math is cumulative, it is imperative to address issues as soon as they appear. Issues in upper grades are really issues that were glossed over in elementary.
So, let's:
* Learn how to learn math - getting the most from the text, classes and homework.
* Master the concepts
* Develop techniques to be really ready for exams
* Learn how to make this knowledge yours for the long term
* Understand how math is used in the real world.
As I child, I was fortunate to experience math in the kitchen making everything from scratch, helping build with my dad (two houses, barn, fences...), and earning money to pay for college. Numbers and equations for me became trusted allies to accomplish my goals.
