I am a Canon shooter. Always have been and probably always will be, but the fact is that all DSLRs have the same basic functionality. Learning basic photography and the skills associated with it really have nothing to do with who made your camera. Even the differences between film and digital are minimal when you are learning the very basics.
After a quick evaluation of your level of knowledge, we can jump right in. We can use whatever camera you have or I can bring a few for you to learn with. If you are comfortable with your camera, have solid photography skills,, and are looking to utilize the advanced features of your camera, we probably should stick with Canon. Someone else would better serve you if you are a Nikon, Sony, or Pentax shooter.
While much of my life is devoted to photography, I have a wide variety of other talents, experience and skills. My background includes commercial diving, 25 years an an RN, professional adventure racing, and software designer. In addition to my professional photography, I am working as a consultant to companies creating electronic health records.
My photographic specialties are large animals (horse, alpaca, etc) and travel photography/writing. I have just stared a new project with a friend of mine to photograph the street performers of Seattle.
I have business experience as well, so if you are looking to turn your photography from hobby into business, I can help with that.
Something every photographer needs is computer experience. Not only do I have more than 10 years experience in software design, and 5 years experience with Photoshop and Lightroom, I have built all my own computers for the past 15 years. Building PCs is much easier than you might think and I can teach you how to do it in less than a day. Kids as young as 10 years old can accomplish it with a little guidance.
