ESL/ESOL

I received my training in ESL/ESOL through the Adult Literacy Center in North Carolina. For four years I have worked with numerous adults from Japan learning English as their second language for the purposes of understanding and speaking English, as well as assisting them in their studies for GED and general collegiate learning.

Phonics

I received my training in phonics through the Adult Literacy Center in North Carolina. For three years I have worked with numerous adults learning to read and write English. Phonics plays a key role as it helps students map sounds onto spellings, enabling them to decode words. The decoding of words aids in the development of word recognition, which increases reading fluency. Reading fluency improves reading comprehension as students no longer struggle with decoding words, and can concentrate on making meaning from the text.

Additionally, phonics instruction improves spelling ability because it emphasizes spelling patterns that become familiar from reading. Studies show that half of all English words can be spelled with phonics rules that relate to one letter to one sound.

Speech

Pronunciation of certain sounds and letters can be a daunting task when trying to speak a non-native language. My training in phonics (through the North Carolina Adult Literacy Center) which includes proper tounge placement, force of air and width of mouth opening, has been crucial in allowing non-native, English speakers to pronounce English words in a clearer, understandable fashion.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
