Hello, with eight years of essential tutoring experience under my belt, I am confident that I have the patience and understanding necessary to allow you to thrive in your studies. I am currently an AmeriCorps member serving at Edmonds Community College as a student engagement specialist. I serve as an advisor to the sustainability advocates, develop service projects for STEM (science technology engineering math) students, and as an assistant teacher to the calyx elementary school on Whidbey Island. I am currently a tutor to two sets of siblings, both in elementary reading, writing, and math, but I have previous experience working with all age groups (young elementary to adults) and various subjects (essay writing, ESL, high school science, etc). I believe I have gained a great drive to be a willing but fun educator while working as an assistant teacher at the University of Washington Children's Center and during Pacific Science Center's science camps.
In addition to my role as an educator, I am a marine biology enthusiast and hope to one day work myself up to be a biologist within an accredited aquarium. I am an interpretive and life science volunteer at the Seattle aquarium during the weekends. I am also a certified SCUBA diver who is a great admirer of our Puget Sound! I believe that conservation and sustainability is a life lesson that affects us all!
I hope to further discuss my skills and experience in detail with you soon!
My accumulated education experience has given me the skills necessary to be an effective K-6th tutor. Currently I help with two 3rd and 4th grade home school students in reading and reading comprehension. I have been working with them for a year. The work is already pre-determined by a school district. We start off with critically reading a subject and answering in-depth questions about what he/she has just read. We end by reading out loud while reviewing difficult vocabulary words that may arise during the reading. I also tutor two other 3rd and 6th grade students in reading comprehension, the writing process, and any homework issues that may arise. The writing process is a multi-step approach to publishing a completely error-free final draft. I have both of them brainstorm about the assigned prompt, write a first draft, edit by themselves and then with me, write a second draft, re-edit again, and finally be able to have learned from their mistakes and independently write a final draft. Also, during the whole summer of 2013 I was an assistant teacher to Pacific Science Center's science camps- I worked with a wide range of 1st to 6th graders. My time at the Pacific Science Center gave me the chance to experience a classroom since I did not work with a couple of students but an entire classroom full. I quickly learned to manage a larger audience, keep their focus and attention, cater to individual needs, and ultimately teach a fun lesson several times a day.
