Hello, my name is James M. Currently, I am on a summer break from Digipen Institute of Technology where I am a junior, working to earn a bachelor's degree in fine art and animation.
I believe what I lack in formal training as a teacher, I make up for in raw understanding of writing, and being able to easily relate to people on a personal level. I know what it's like to be ignored in a classroom or not get the help one needs to succeed, and if given the opportunity, I would like to prevent that from happening to any student.
I have previous experience mentoring handicapped children in a summer arts program, and am familiar with working with all different types of children.
My deepest interests in writing span rhetoric, satire, philosophy, and storytelling.
I've always performed well in English classes and when graduating high school received an award for excellence in English. English has always been a subject I've been able to help others in. I have no trouble breaking down concepts and ideas and making them more digestible for others.
As a chief component of writing, I've developed a strong sense of grammatical propriety. Grammar should be taught in a way where it's applicable, not overloading the student with rules. Through repetition of writing the rules become internalized naturally.
I've always excelled at reading, and my interest in philosophy has forced me to learn to parse dense material with ease. I understand how to explain material and analyze it, rather than just recite or regurgitate. The fundamentals of reading begin with basic understanding that words are simply a currency in the economy of thoughts and ideas.
Spelling has always gone hand in hand with my skill in writing. To me it's simply a process of remembering how particular words are spelled. The use of phonetics and a basic understanding of spelling conventions is generally the best way to build a foundation when teaching.
I've always excelled at writing throughout school, earning an award for excellence in English my senior year. Writing requires strong fundamentals in every process and should be taught accordingly. Exercises in composition, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary are important. Ostensibly writing is one of the most important means of communication.
