Liberal Arts Tutor (ESL, English, Spanish, History, Test Prep)

Hi! I'm Mary, and I'm a tutor for the liberal arts. I have 2 years of experience, and having been working at the Writing and Tutoring Center at Tacoma Community College since September.
I am in the process of being certified at Level 2 (of 3) through the International Tutor Training Certificate Program. I have a TESL (teaching ESL) certification, as well as a bachelor's degree in History from Western. I also have a minor in Spanish.

I have worked with adult learners in technical and community colleges in Whatcom County and at-risk children in Skagit County. I have worked with elementary school kids, and, of course, the wide variety of students who attend TCC. I have also worked internationally in both Mexico and Turkey with English language learners.

My tutoring style is one that focuses on working together to find the best approach and solution. I never just give the answer, I always ask questions that help a student find the answer for themselves. I believe in creating a skill base that will allow students to learn concepts and recognize patterns, not just answer one specific question.

Grammar

I currently work as a tutor at a local community college, and much of my work is in proofreading and grammar review for papers. I have a background in English grammar, and consistently receive training on how to give feedback in constructive ways.

European History

I graduate college with a BA in History, with a focus on the ancient world and a second one in European history.

Spanish

I have a minor in Spanish from Western Washington University, and have taken classes since the 7th grade. I currently tutor Spanish at a local community college. I have used my language skills to travel and teach in Costa Rica, Spain, and Mexico.

Writing

English

I currently work as a tutor at a local community college, and much of my work is in helping people with their English papers. I have a background in English grammar and essay writing. I consistently give feedback in constructive ways, and will always help you understand WHY something works or doesn't work.

ESL/ESOL

I have a certification in teaching ESL, and have taught in community college ESL classes in Whatcom County. I have also taught students in Mexico and Turkey.

World History

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in history, and focused on ancient history and European history, with some emphasis on Africa and the Middle East. I am well versed in world events, both current and past, and this allows me to help you draw connections between cultures and events.

GRE

I recently took the GRE and scored in the 60% for quantitative, 83% for qualitative, and 96% for writing. I believe I can help you learn and practice the skills necessary to do well on this test.
