I am an experienced broad-based tutor with a lifetime of learning in a myriad of subjects. I have a Masters of English degree and have taught a variety of college writing level classes at several colleges in Washington state. I have a current 4-12 Washington state teaching certificate and have tutored at-risk students and students with health and behavior issues directly for a school district. I have substituted in instrumental and vocal music classrooms, in library, language, science, social studies and history, and of course, Language Arts classrooms. I can understand a little Spanish and have taught an ESL class for Mexican cannery workers. I have been fortunate to travel in countries like Guatemala, Costa Rico, Mexico and Spain. Recently, I returned from Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia. I'm not another Rick Steves, but I have traveled to England and many countries in Europe and eastern Europe and Russia, and I have studied Comparative Literature since my undergraduate days at the University of Washington.
For more than a decade I have been performing on french horn in the greater Seattle area, including some stints in pit orchestras--ranging from "The Mikado" to "Oklahoma"; I would welcome beginning & intermediate french horn students, and I could help beginning trumpet players. I read music and have performed with choirs. I helped organize and performed at a benefit concert for a neighborhood impacted by an arsonist; some Seattle Symphony musicians played the band arrangements with us. It is a privilege to tutor one-on-one and establish a positive relationship which motivates the student to achieve his/her best.
I follow scientific developments, especially in astronomy and genetics and anthropology, and have assisted in international raptor migration projects. During this anniversary of the Mount St. Helen's eruption, I have been the volunteer "publicist" for the man (my former student) who took historic pictures of this volcano. I tap into the student's natural interests and expand from there. For years I have been scoring the essay portion of the national SAT's, but I regret because of possible conflict of interest, I must not exclusively be hired as an SAT tutor.
