My name is Theresa.
I have a bachelor of science in education from Central Washington University; major-early childhood education/minor-elementary education, graduating class of 1999.
My experience includes 15 years of teaching. I received the Teacher Leadership Project grant funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2002. This grant involved one year of technology training and $9000 in equipment for my classroom. My post-graduate courses included 45 credits, in reading, writing, math, technology, classroom management, diversity, etc.
In addition to teaching, I mentor a child through Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, beginning in 2007.
I have two children of my own ages 26 and 21. They are healthy, happy people pursuing their dreams!
I love working one-on-one with kids, because it allows me to customize their education. I work hard to find the right method and style based on students' needs.
I have 12 years of teaching experience in elementary education. My training includes many hours in literacy courses with the "workshop" method of teaching. I love teaching reading and writing to young students. The workshop style involves helping students identify books that are at their level. I teach strategies of reading that are authentic and that is key to improving reading skills. I also incorporate phonics instruction based on the child's needs.
As an elementary school teacher for the last 12 years I have used phonics techniques with children extensively. I've taken special classes including "Making Words" by Patricia Cunningham.
I love reading! I have many hours of instruction and education in this area. I enjoy helping children better their reading skills. I feel one of the most important factors in a child's ability to read well, is that they have lots of reading experiences from the time their babies. Some students don't get that and it can hurt their success when they start school. Children with special needs may need extra help with reading, too. Well, that is where I come in. I use fun reading activities and help children gain understanding of good reading strategies. Once they start to feel like a reader, they become interested in reading. The goal is to choose books that they like and are at their level. Not too hard or too easy. Just right.
I am a licensed teacher for Pre-K through grade 8. My experience includes teaching in public schools since 1999 and private one-on-one tutoring since 2009. I have recently purchased the Susan Kruger S.O.A.R. Study Skills program. This program offers students organizational skills, note-taking tips, time-management tools, and many other skills to ensure success. I am very happy to help students become more motivated and empower them to get the success they want by utilizing this program. I am very capable of delivering study skills curriculum to any student in middle school and up through college. The Susan Kruger S.O.A.R program lays it all out in an easy to follow format that I will guide students through in 6-10 sessions. Supplies are needed.
