I approach everything from a creative point of view. I believe that everyone learns just a tiny bit differently - some are visual learners, some are auditory, associative, and there are many more learning types. In every instance, I think finding the place of understanding jump-starts the learning process. I love the "aha" moment when someone "gets" a concept, idea, or equation. I firmly believe everyone is capable of grasping every concept. It is simply a matter of finding the place of understanding for that individual.

I believe that first and foremost I am creative. I am an outside the box thinker. I believe that everything can be fun or at least enjoyable. I like to create a positive, affirming, and engaging atmosphere while teaching. I also believe I can learn at least as much from my students as I may impart to them. I often say, "If you aren't having fun...you aren't doing it right."

I firmly believe character and integrity are the bedrock of a strong work ethic. I believe that a strong work ethic must also include a genuine heart for the mission and for those involved. Building upon this foundation, I believe my greatest assets are thinking outside the box, my enthusiasm in the notion that every problem has a solution, and a genuine ability to inspire and motivate others.

Growing up in a military household, I have lived all over the world. I have enjoyed traveling as well as meeting and interacting with people from diverse cultures and beliefs.

I count myself very fortunate to have lived the well-traveled lifestyle of a military family. I believe that I am a better person for having experienced “life around the world” as my hometown as well as the people from every walk of life as my neighbors.

Aspergers

My qualifications include a year and a half in a residential setting with those with disabilities. I was the facility manager for a 40 unit residential care facility. My daily routine included working with case managers, counseling with clients, teaching, and disciplining. Most residents were developmentally disabled, most with mild degrees of Autism/Aspergers.

I have found that every moment can be a learning moment. My approach is to give clear, concise explanations; lots of visual supports; a very separate & quiet place for study; and "teaching" social norms, empathy, and why people react the way they do in regard to their feelings is essential.

Also, my best friend's son was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome at the age of 10. He is now almost 20. As both of them have been an integral part of my life, I learned the signs and symptoms of Asperger's.

I also learned the most affective ways to deal with behavioral issues as well as learning processes. Just as each person is an individual -- signs, symptoms, and learning styles differ with the degree Asperger's affects that individual. However, behavior modification, social skills training, and consistency are most helpful.

My friend's son was a great student. We not only worked on his schoolwork, but also engaged him in board games, cards, and brain-teasers. Explaining emotional responses was his most difficult challenge. Games seemed to get these points across to him.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience as a tutor for ages 4 through 15 in general education and study skills. My approach is that of the principles learned through education classes in college as well as using creative methods to instill and retain thoughts and ideas.

I have raised three children (not my own) and saw each through years of homework, study, and tests. Now each is in college and doing very well.

Study Skills

There are several types of learning styles. I use the most common three - visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. As each student may have one prominent style, each is just as likely to have a combination of styles.

In tutoring,(particularly with those who may have challenges, I find that the associative style is also very helpful.

I have tutored students from pre-school to college ages.

Theatre

I have worked in the performing arts all my life. My first experiences, as a child, include dance recitals, talent shows, and appearances on children's television programming.

I have a double major BS Degree in Theatre and Speech Communications from Murray State University in Murray, KY. Within those disciplines, I have not only taken classes in acting, directing, lighting, stage design, public speaking; but I also have real life experiences as an actor, director, and technical director.

I have participated in community theatres in several cities. I have also been the editor of a theatre monthly newsletter for a regional theatre, "Callboard."

Writing scripts and producing a touring children's theatre within the public school system is one of my favorite experiences.

Video Production

I have worked for the past 15 years in a professional production situation. Among my duties were to produce video presentations from 5 minutes to 2 hours in length.

From script-writing, rehearsals, camera operator, to finished production in software applications such as "Final Cut Pro" I have produced commercials, advertising & marketing pieces, and an 8 minute movie trailer for an award-winning writer.
