University of Cambridge (Master's)
My name is Elissa and I am a recent English Literature graduate with a passion for teaching. I graduated with distinction from Stanford University in 2010 with a BA in Classics and Italian. In 2012, I completed an MA in English Literature at the University of Cambridge in England. During my years as a student I undertook a variety of teaching positions. As an undergraduate, I worked as a teacher for an after-school program and served as co-president of a group that provided free music lessons to low-income youth. Last year, I taught an Advanced English Language course for an international summer school program in Cambridge. I developed my own curriculum for this course, targeting a range of levels and degrees of fluency. I have also worked as a summer school teacher, private tutor and college counselor in the Seattle area. My areas of expertise include literature, grammar, essay-writing, SAT reading and writing, TOEFL and public speaking.
I aim to pursue a career in education, and it is my goal to share my passion for literature and language with each one of my students. During the first lesson, we will determine the skills that need improvement and then develop a plan that targets those areas. Language and literature coursework typically involves a combination of oral and written assignments as well as critical reading exercises. I am also happy to correspond regularly with parents to keep them updated on their students' progress. I believe in challenging and inspiring my students to perform at their best. I look forward to working with you! My name is Elissa and I am a recent English Literature graduate with a passion for teaching. Our son, who has been in challenge classes all throughout middle school, is currently struggling in 9th grade High School English honors. We looked at Elissa's background and resume and were instantly impressed with her credentials.
We have been using Elissa for over a month and our son has been doing increasingly better on his homework and exams. Not only is she helping him with his current work, but she's also preparing him for the SAT exam. She is thinking ahead and getting our son ready for college.
We thoroughly enjoy her hard work attitude. Not a second is wasted in the tutoring session. She goes above and beyond to explain and teach the concepts that our son is learning. Elissa is a fantastic tutor and we would highly recommend her!
Elissa is great! I found her to be a patient and encouraging tutor who did a great job of keeping us on track with the goals I wanted to achieve. We worked on English grammar, in which she was very knowledgeable, and she was able to teach me in a way that was clear and easy to understand. I appreciated the enthusiasm she brought to our session, and I'm very much looking forward to working with her again. Thank you!
So far both my kids have enjoyed having Elissa tutor them. They look forward to having their next lessons with her. Thanks.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For the past five years, I have taught K-6th students in a variety of subjects, including language arts, math and music. I have worked with private academies and volunteer groups and as a freelance tutor in the Seattle area. In my lessons I teach from textbooks and devise my own curriculum, such as worksheets and interactive activities tailored to each student's abilities. I currently hold a BA in Classics from Stanford University and a second BA/MA in English Literature from the University of Cambridge.
