My name is Winnie. I was born in China and completed junior high there. I grew up speaking both Mandarin and Cantonese.
I immigrated to the U.S. with my family in my mid teens. Despite the fact that I came to this country at a challenging age and barely spoke any English, I finished high school with excellent grades in all my language-rated classes. In fact, I got all A's! By the time I graduated, I spoke English so fluently that I was able to get my first summer job as a cashier at a busy Midtown restaurant in New York City. How did I learn so quickly? The answer is simple: I just loved studying languages! So it's no surprise that I enjoy helping others with their language learning.
My first ESL teaching experience was as a substitute teacher for a summer ESL program while in college. After receiving my master's degree, I worked in New York public libraries where I assisted many new immigrants who spoke very little English. Later I relocated to the Middle East with my husband and worked as a college librarian and ESL teacher assistant. I helped students with their classwork and had the chance to teach the class a few times myself. In my spare time, I tutored several students of various language backgrounds including Arabic, Asian, and European. After returning to the U.S., I ran a retail business in the Seattle area for few years before settling to a home-based business with my husband. I now finally have the flexibility and time to do more language tutoring--something I love to do!
As far as Chinese teaching, I started giving lessons to friends and acquaintances when I was in high school. My first student was my dentist! I have since tutored students of various levels and ages, ranging from age 4 to age 69! My students include my own children whom I have tutored both Cantonese and Mandarin, I’m currently tutoring Chinese Mandarin to a few adults and several children age 4 to 16.
What sets me apart from other tutors?
First, my specialty is language tutoring, and that is my ONLY focus! I don't teach other subjects like many other tutors do, so I can focus what I know and can do best: teaching Chinese and English/ESL!
Second, I'm a responsible and caring teacher (I'm a mom of two teenagers!). As you can see from my WyzAnt page, I've gotten one of the highest percentages of top-rating-per-lesson ratio (lessons ranges from 1 to 2 hours). That means my students have rated virtually all my lessons, and ALL with 5-STAR RATINGS! They've also written FANTASTIC REVIEWS for me. As the mother of one of my youngest students told me, "the reason my son pays attention to you is because YOU LISTEN to him, and he is simply returning you the favor!"
So if you want an effective tutor who truly cares about her students, you will want to hire me!
Thank you for taking the time to read my profile and I hope to work with you soon.
