I was born in Guandong China and completed junior high there. Therefore I have a solid foundation in the Chinese language. I speak both Mandarin and Cantonese fluently.
I received my high school, college and graduate school education in the U.S. so I'm also fluent in English as well. I think proficiency in English is very important when you're tutoring English-speaking students!
My first ESL teaching experience was as a substitute teacher for a summer ESL program while in college. After I received my Master's degree(in Library Science), I worked in several New York public library branches where there was a large immigrant population and dealt with many library patrons who spoke very little or no English. Later I relocated to the middle east with my husband and worked as an librarian and teacher assistant in a college library. As a teacher assistant of an English (ESL) class, I helped students with their classwork and taught the class a few times myself when the teacher was absent. Since returning to the Seattle area, I'd owned retail business for few years before settling to a home based business which affords me the flexibility and time to do more language tutoring--something I love! My newest ESL students are a friend, and an employee of mine.
As far as Chinese teaching, I started giving lessons to friends and acquaintances when I was in high school. My first student was my dentist! I have since tutored several friends and family members, including my children. My students range from age 4 to age 69!
What makes me a the the best tutor for you? First, it is my love of language learning. While most find studying of languages boring, I find it fun and exciting!
Second is own success story! I had to start learning a new language (English) at the challenging age of 15(!), and I was able to graduate from high school on time and went on to complete undergraduate and a post-undergraduate education. I've since been a successful professional and business owner. I know what it's like to learning a brand new second language because I've been through it myself! Therefore I can really relate to my students.
Third, as a mother of two teenagers, you know I'll be a patient and responsible teacher! I recently sold a retail business to be more available for my family.
And finally, my current flexible schedule enables me to work with my students in terms of time and location of their lessons.
So if you are looking for a responsible tutor who's not only passionate about the subject she teaches but also really cares about her students, I am the one for you!!
(*Please note that I don't have many student feedbacks yet as I'm a newly registered WyzAnt tutor.)
